Mixed ligand complexes of iron (II) with an aliphatic diamine (ethylenediamine) and a dicarboxyclic acid such as oxalic, malonic, succinic or phthalic acid, were synthesized and used for tanning experiments either alone or in combination with aluminium or vegetable tanning materials. The leather samples obtained in all three methods were tested for hydrothermal stability and iron content. Combination tanned leathers exhibited higher stability when compared to pure iron tanned systems. The iron content in all three systems was low and a direct correlation between metal content and hydrothermal stability could not be made as the factors influencing the strength characteristics in a combination tanned system are quite different from those of pure iron tanned leathers. The vegetable-iron combination tanned leathers were found to be soft and dark. |
