When exposed to heat, intumescent fire-retardant coatings expand and build an insulating char. This study presents an investigation of the char by addition of kaolinite, barite, and titania as functional fillers in intumescent coatings. Expansion experiments at 400°C with custom build image analysis showed that kaolinite inhibited (0.03 mm/s, expansion factor ≈ 7), whereas barite acted synergistically on the expansion ability (0.59 mm/s, expansion factor ≈ 85). The resulting char density and the visual inspection showed that barite char was less compact, with cracks and voids. Evaluation of fire performance by single burning item tests resulted in Euroclass C for the barite system and Euroclass A2/B for the titania system. Post-heating chars demonstrated poor thermostability of barite char, and subsequent FTIR spectroscopy revealed that titania char formed the thermostable titanium pyrophosphate. Further inspection of the titania char revealed a uniform closed cell structure with mean bubble sizes of 26–56 µm. Titania coating expands rapidly (0.37 mm/s, expansion factor ≈ 60) and forms a structurally stable tumescent char with a compact and uniform porous structure exhibiting resistance to char oxidation at sustained heating. Titre : Enhancing egyptian kaolinite via calcination and dealumination for application in paper coating Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Samya El-Sherbiny, Auteur ; Fatma A. Morsy, Auteur ; Mervat S. Hassan, Auteur ; Heba F. Mohamed, Auteur Année de publication : 2015 Article en page(s) : p. 739-749 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Pigments -- Propriétés optiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The aim of this study was to optimize the modification of Egyptian kaolinite for application in paper coating. The study focused on four modification methods; sedimentation process, chemical bleaching, calcination, and dealumination. The effect of these methods on the structure of kaolinite was studied using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis, and field emission SEM. The original and modified kaolinites were applied in paper coating mixtures. The results of XRF analysis showed that the Fe2O3 and TiO2 in Egyptian kaolinite were reduced chemically via sodium dithionite from 0.41% to 0.25% and 2.20% to 2.00%, respectively. Calcination at 900°C, followed by acid activation and bleaching, showed a further decrease in Fe2O3 and TiO2 impurities to 0.012 and 1.45 (wt%), respectively. XRD results revealed that all characteristics reflection of kaolinite disappeared upon calcination. SEM investigation showed a significant reduction in kaolinite particle size. Calcination and dealumination of kaolinite did not improve coated paper roughness, while air permeance and optical properties significantly increased in comparison with commercial kaolinite. In addition, a significant improvement was observed in coated paper mechanical properties including burst, tensile strength, stretch, and tensile energy absorption with respect to original and commercial kaolinite. In contrast, the kaolinite fraction <2 µm highly improved paper gloss, print density, and print gloss, more than calcined kaolinite and its modified pigments. In conclusion, dealumination of calcined kaolinite did not show any further change in all coated paper properties compared to the calcined ones. We demonstrate that the mass balance measurements we used are a rapid way to screen surfactants in terms of their potential to be used in enhanced oil recovery applications. Surfactant classes investigated include: alkyl(aryl) sulfonates, ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymers, ethoxylated alkylphenols, alkyl polyglucosides, sorbitan ester ethoxylates, alkyl alcohol propoxylated sulfate sodium salts, gemini surfactants, sulfosuccinates and organo siliconeethylene oxide-propylene oxide terpolymers. We identified several surfactants which had zero retention under the test conditions and which may therefore be suitable as enhanced oil recovery chemicals in surfactant flooding schemes. We discuss surfactant retention mechanisms on kaolinite clay and analyze surfactant structure-retention relationships for several surfactant classes.

Index. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Now let us come to the next raw material which is used as a substitute for Rutile in combination with Rutile and Zeolex, namely Calcined China Clay. In fact CC Clay plays a very important part is the Rutile substitutions. Sonne manufacturers of this product claim the CC Clay atone is sufficient to replace Rutile in the formulation. But considering the cost of such special Calcined China Clay to use it as a sole substitute, it is better to use it combination with other raw materials which will result in good formulation economy without affecting the end results.
