Thiocyano-méthylthiobenzotiazoleIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The compound, 2- (thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole (TCMTB) has proven effective for controlling fungal growth on leather. Good protection of the hides requires addition of the fungicide in a manner that assures its maximum transfer to the hide from the liquor to which it is added. Experiments with TCMTB labeled with radioactive carbon-14 showed that uptake of the fungicide by the hides was greatest when the TCMTB was added as soon as practical in the tanning process. When TCMTB was added to the chrome liquor at the beginning of tanning, over 90 percent of it was taken up by the hides, while adding the fungicide three hours af ter the start of tanning reduced the uptake to 77 percent. Exposure of treated hides in a tropical chamber showed that the duration of mold resistance was directly related to TCMTB uptake. Hides containing 100 ppm of TCMTB remained free of any visible fungal growth for over 25 days under these severe conditions. Note de contenu : - Fungal growth on leather

Thiocyano-méthylthiobenzotiazoleIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The new ISO 13365:2011 develops a test method for the determination of the content of the preservative agents 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB), 4-chloro-3-methylphenol (PCMC), 2-phenylphenol (OPP) and 2-Octyl-3(2H)-isothiazolone (OIT) in leather by liquid chromatography. The simultaneous determination of the fungicides TCMTB, PCMC, OPP, OIT, and also 2-mercaptobenzothiazol (MBT) and 3-iodo-2-propynyl-butylcarbamate (IPBC) in leather samples was carried out by liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array ultraviolet detection. The sample preparation and extraction step was performed following the new ISO 13365 Standard. The mobile phase was 0.1% formic acid in water (A) : 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile (B). Gradient: 60% B, 6 min isocratic, then linear to 95% B in 9 min. The chromatographic detection introduced only a minor change with respect to the Standard: a photo diode array detector was used instead of a single wavelength ultraviolet one, thereby improving the reliability of the identifications and the sensitivity of the quantification. It has been ensured that 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) not interfere in the determination. The leather fortifications of 30 and 300 mg/kg yielded average TCMTB recoveries of 94% and 99%, respectively. The recoveries of the other fungicides were similar. The targeted fungicides were determined in 40 samples of commercial leather. Residues of TCMTB were found in 90% of samples. In summary, the new ISO 13365:2011 Standard provides a quick and reliable method not only for the determination of the four molecules that are within the scope of the Standard but also for other fungicides such as IPBC and MBT. Thiocyano-méthylthiobenzotiazoleIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Pentachlorophenol was a standard fungicide used in the leather industry, legislation has now limited the permitted levels and substitute fungicides based on such products as 2-(Thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB) have been introduced. This paper reports the synthesis of chloro methylthiocyanate (CMTC), which is used as an intermediate for synthesis of TCMTB. The compound is characterised by conventional methods, I.R., 1 HNMR and mass spectral data. Thiocyano-méthylthiobenzotiazoleIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : We have investigated the mode of action of synthetic biocides, (2-(thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole(TCMTB), dichlorophen, (commonly used in leather industry for preservation) and natural biocides, oregano and eucalyptus oils, on Aeromonas hydrophila using Raman spectroscopy in collaboration with multivariate analysis and 2D correlation spectroscopy to evaluate whether Raman spectra acquired contained valuable information to study the action of biocides on bacterial cells. The growth of A. hydrophila in clear and outer edge zone of inhibition differ in their reaction with different biocides, which allows us to highlight the differences as a characteristic of two kinds of bacteria. Such classification helps identify oregano oil as the most effective biocide by altering clear and outer edge zone of bacteria. Standard disk diffusion assay method was used for screening biocide bacteria interactions and later analysed by Raman spectroscopy. The paper also presents the introduction of TCMTB and oregano oil into leather processing stages to examine and determine the antimicrobial effect as an application to real-world setting. Therefore, we conclude that Raman spectroscopy with appropriate computational tools constitutes a powerful approach for screening biocides, which provide solutions to all the industries using biocides including leather industry, considering the potentially harmful effect of biocides to humans and the environment.
