Lighting is of critical concern to the effective and consistent control of the perceived colour of all products. It is therefore important that all stakeholders involved in managing a commercial supply chain, including product design, colour standards development, manufacture and point of sale, work to understand and control the lighting environment during each stage of a product’s life cycle. New examples of lighting variability in a small and large US retail chain store are presented to illustrate key concepts. Some of the recent published work on retail lighting is reviewed, as well as some of the likely future directions of retail lighting in terms of environmental and technology development.
