Itaconic acid (IA) and monomethyl itaconate (MMI) grafted polyethylene (PE) were used as compatibilizers. Na-MMT was modified by dodecyl-, hexadecyl-, and octadecyl-ammonium chlorides and then the compatibilizers were synthesized in solution reaction. 5 wt% organoclay and different concentration of compatibilizers (5, 10, and 15 wt%) were used for the PNC preparations to compare the effects of compatibilizers. The interlayer spacings, d001, and the mechanical properties of samples were measured by XRD analysis and universal testing machine, respectively. The experimental tensile moduli were used in Halpin-Tsai micro mechanical model to obtain "l/t" ratios and the results were compared experimental d001 values obtained from XRD data. It was found that the experimental results are in good agreement with the calculated results. Note de contenu : - Materials

ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of renewable unsaturated polyesters were synthesized from itaconic acid (IA), succinic acid, and 1,4-butanediol by solvent-free polycondensation. Previous studies utilizing IA to make polyesters for coating applications have shown great potential; however, the curing and material properties have not been investigated in detail. The aim of this study was to investigate how the curing is affected by the amount of unsaturations and how well itaconate-based polyesters crosslink without the addition of any other unsaturated monomers or reactive diluents. The chemical structures of the polyesters were confirmed with FTIR, 1H-NMR, and THF–SEC. The degree of curing was studied with FTIR, and the mechanical properties of the crosslinked polyesters were evaluated with DMA, pendulum hardness, and microindentation. The degree of curing was found to be up to 75%, and furthermore, it was found that the final mechanical properties of the crosslinked coatings could be tuned by modifying the IA content in the monomer composition. The results from DMA showed that there is a clear trend between mechanical properties and crosslinking density. Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The current study presents an attempt to develop two molecules, namely sulfonated aromatic diol (SAD) and sulfonated aromatic diamine (SADAM), to induce flame retardancy, thermal stability, and dispersion ability for water-based polyurethane dispersions (WPUDs). The previously reported itaconic acid-based polyester polyol was used for prepolymer synthesis as well as for chain extension. Pre- and post-sulfonated compounds were subjected to characterization tests such as FTIR, 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, and CHNS for confirmation of their structures. The standard dispersant used for the basis of comparison was commercially available dimethyl propionic acid (DMPA). WPUDs were synthesized in different molar concentrations of DMPA, SAD, and SADAM, and the covalent incorporation of all three molecules in the polymer backbone was confirmed by FTIR. The WPUD films were subjected to various thermal tests like TGA and DSC as well as mechanical tests like flexibility and pencil hardness. WPUD films obtained from SADAM showed a remarkable increase in Tg as well as char content. The THRI values for SAD- and SADAM-based films were better than DMPA-based films. SAD- and SADAM-based WPUD films also showed an increase in LOI value and UL-94 ratings with the maximum LOI value of 26. Dispersions based on DMPA showed better stability as compared to dispersions based on SAD and SADAM. A number of copolymerization runs were carried out with different IA concentrations. The effect of functional monomer on the overall conversion, the colloidal properties of the latexes, and the distribution of the carboxylic groups (buried, particle surface and aqueous phase) were examined. The carboxylic groups present in the latexes were analyzed using conductimetric and potentiometric titrations. The behavior of the IA on the wet scrub resistance of highly pigmented paints for architectural coatings was examined and correlated with the distribution of the carboxylic groups. The results obtained showed that the properties of highly pigmented paints are greatly dependent on the amount and distribution of the carboxylic groups. The carboxylic acid distributed in the aqueous phase has a strong influence on the wet scrub resistance and on the characteristics of the final products. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Owing to the environmental issues, there is a moderate demand of renewable resources in the chemical industry. Conversely, as a rather decrease in side effect of this growth, new chemical building blocks are achieved, which are not commercially accomplished from petroleum sources. The substitution of materials from limited petroleum resources through renewable materials presents the necessary challenge. In this prospect, itaconic acid achieved prominent attention and its trifunctional structure leads to the synthesis of nove) sustainable polymeric materials. ltaconic acid, a carbohydrate derived aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, is a potential chemical for the synthesis of renewable resource-based adhesives and coatings. This material is the biobased mass product itaconic acid, which is structurally similar to monomers like acrylic and methacrylic acid. This paper aims to review the most relevant work in the field of adhesives and coatings derived from itaconic acid and to show the unique properties of these materials and identify the potential applications.
