The thin film does not obscure or harshen the leather grain. Titanium dioxide is also used in combination with other materials for tinting leathers. As regards its inertness towards tanning materials in leathers, it does not suffer from darkening by ageing. Titanium has the best corrosion resistance as a result of its passivation (less than 0.007 mm/year) and hence it imparts better corrosion resistance than any other material usually employed in tanning systems. The white leather with anticorrosive properties produced by titanium tannage finds extensive utilisation in the production of protective gloves, clothing leathers and other outfits required to be used in corrosive atmospheres.
With regard to its function as a tannage agent, the studies carried out so far have been based on predominantly anionic titanium and the leathers obtained possessed lower hydrothermal stability, abrasive resistance and strength. In these studies, titanium exists as a double salt, viz. {(NH4)2SO4TiO(SO4)2x H201 and is in the anionic form.
This double salt, when used alone as well as in combination with certain organic and inorganic salts, is found to have filling and tanning effects in the production of leathers. A literature survey indicates that titanium forms very stable complexes in its quadrivalent state, the metal itself remaining cationic. Thus, it seems interesting to study the complexes of Ti(IV) with reference to pre-tanning, retanning and simultaneous tanning systems involving titanium, leading to fixation/ stripping of the components of the systems taken up for such tannages.Note de contenu : - Application of titanium in general

Wet-white (tannage)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : This paper focuses on the effect of masking agents and tanning with zinc and zinc-titanium metal complexes. Sodium formate, sodium acetate, sodium citrate and sodium tartrate were used as masking agents. The best masking condition was chosen corresponding to the highest shrinkage temperature. Zinc sulfate and titanium sulfate, in different concentrations, were chosen as tanning agents in mixed-tanning experiments. The highest shrinkage temperature of the wet-white was 77°C, and the attendant zinc content in its leather was 3.63%. After retannage with chrome powder, the shrinkage temperature of the resultant leather increased as expected, and reached 96°C. The wet-white was successfully split which tend to the use of non-chrome pre-tanning, the finished leather was able to meet the requirements. Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The ultraviolet-visible and near-infrared diffuse reflection (UV-Vis-NIR DR) spectroscopy was employed for further understanding the mechanisms of three kinds of classical tannages, including aldehyde tanning, vegetable tanning and mineral tanning. The NIR DR spectra of glutaraldehyde tanned leather exhibited a decreased peak intensity of amino group at 1475 nm, suggesting that the main reaction groups of collagen in aldehyde tanning are amino groups. Comparing the NIR DR spectra of pickled pelt and vegetable tanned leather, it was proved that the vegetable tanning is based on the mechanism of multiple hydrogen bonding interaction, where the amino groups, carboxyl groups and peptide chains are involved. As for mineral tannages, the tanning mechanisms of chromium sulfate, zirconium sulfate, ferrum sulfate, titanium sulfate and aluminum sulfate were investigated. Based on UV-Vis-NIR DR analysis in the wavelength range of 200 to 2070 nm, it was confirmed that the main reactions involved in mineral tanning are the chelating interactions of metal ions with both the carboxyl groups and the amino groups of collagen, although the reactivity of metal salts toward carboxyl groups is higher than toward amino groups. The reactivity of metal salts toward carboxyl groups of collagen follows the sequence of chromium salt > zirconium salt > ferrum salt > titanium salt > aluminum salt. However, the reactivity of metal salts to amino groups of collagen is in the sequence of zirconium salt > chromium salt > ferrum salt > titanium salt > aluminum salt. Meanwhile, the peptide chain of collagen was also found to play an important role in fixation of metal ions during tanning process.
