A standard process was applied to the left halves of goatskins from Nigeria, whereas the right halves were subjected to the corresponding variables. The variation in the results of each studied property was evaluated. The statistical analysis of the results obtained in the experimental plan, which was based on a 32 factorial design for two variables at three levels, was carried out by means of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), through the Statgraphics Plus Program. The best results of softness and physical resistances were obtained with the highest fatliquoring agent offer (10 %), whereas a 0 % offer was required to obtain the highest colour intensity and grain firmness. The influence of the neutralization pH was not significant on most of the studied properties. Tannage Résumé : Valonea is one of the well-known vegetable tannins, used for tannage and retanning processes in leather making. Although it is used very extensively in the leather industry, its main components and chemical structure are only gradually being identified. In order to investigate the chemical structure of valonea with novel techniques, MALDI-TOF (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation Time-of-Flight) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) Spectroscopy were used. The MALDI-TOF spectrum showed the presence of low molecular weight fraction of hydrolysable tannins such as nonahydroxytriphnoic, flavogallonic acid, ellagic and gallic acid, pentagalloylglucose and all sorts of degradation and oxidation products which are thought to be major components of valonea tannin. Moreover, castalagin/vescalagin and those added by a few residual structures/atoms, thus creating larger molecule and greater mass than castalagin/vescalagin, derived by internal rearrangements of a larger molecule constitute major components of valonea. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Within the optimization of the white hide deliming operation, both plain washing with pure water and chemical processing are concerned. Generally, white hide contains both non-bonded and variously strongly bonded lime. The processing costs of the deliming of non-bonded lime are relatively low, but with decreasing concentration of lime in hide they go up, because the strength of the lime bond increases. In a certain stage of the deliming process, the processing costs begin to increase extremely and in this point it is suitable to interrupt the washing with pure water and replace it with a deliming agent. Our paper, with the use of a mathematical-physical process model, gives the answer to when the interruption should be done. Experimental determinations of sorption isotherm, as well as the effective diffusion coefficients are presented. The above mentioned parameters, economical and technological serve as input data for a computer program. Brown, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p. 164-170 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Genipin, a naturally occurring protein crosslinking agent, isolated from the fruit of Gardenia jasmindides Ellis, is beginning to replace glutaraldehyde as a fixative for biological tissues. Earlier research in this laboratory demonstrated that the apparent shrinkage temperature of hide powder could be increased from 60°C to 79°C by treating the powdered hide with 5% genipin at pH ~ 7 and 35°C for 24 hr, a significant improvement, but not enough for most leather uses. Typical tannages proposed to reduce the use of chromium are combinations of vegetable tannins or aldehydes with each other or with minerals. In this study, the tanning effect on bovine hide powder of genipin in combination with aluminum or vegetable tannins has been investigated. In terms of thermal stability, vegetable tannins in combinations with genipin appear to offer little advantage over either component alone, suggesting little if any synergy. Likewise, aluminum tanning over a genipin pretannage appears to provide little advantage. However, when hide powder was first tanned with 8% aluminum and then retanned with genipin the thermal stability increased linearly with increasing concentrations of genipin (2% to 10%). The apparent shrinkage temperature was > 100°C for aluminum post-tanned with 8%-10% genipin, suggesting the possibility that a practical combination tannage based on genipin could be designed.
