The experimental results showed a good fit with the Shrinking Unreacted-Core model controlled by chemical reaction, and the Progressive-Conversion model did not describe the process. According to Shrinking Unreacted-Core model, the reaction initially occurs on the external surface of the particle and the reaction zone moves toward the center of the particle, leaving behind a layer of inert solid (ash). On the other hand, in the Progressive-Conversion model reaction occurs simultaneously in the entire volume of the particle. The activation energies of the C-O2 and C-CO2 reactions were determinate, as well as their reaction orders. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : One of the great technological challenges of this century is to identify alternative energy sources. The utilization of leather wastes (biomass) to generate energy becomes interesting due to its heating value, as well as for the characteristics of the ash generated, which could be used in other processes such as the production of basic chromium sulfate. Resulting from a partnership between research agencies and private businesses, a semi-pilot unit (350 kWth) was designed and built to process leather wastes. The operation of this semi-pilot unit started in August, 2003. During this period, approximately 200 tons of wastes were treated in over 2,500 h of processing. The semi-pilot unit consists basically of a stratified downdraft gasifier, an oxidation reactor and an air pollution control system (APC). In this paper, the gasifier’s emissions were evaluated and the ash and the flue gas were characterized. Latona, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p. 191-197 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Milling is a key process to soften leather for adequate compliance. It is, however, still not well understood for its effects on leather structure and mechanical properties. To consistently produce high quality leather, it is essential that the tanner understands the impact and effects of every mechanical operation in the leather-making process. This investigation is devoted to gaining a better understanding of milling effects on pliability and other properties of concern to the leather industry, such as mechanical strength and toughness. Observation showed milling leads to a decrease in Young’s modulus, consequently an improved compliance and softness. Data also showed, however, there is little change in tensile strength and toughness. Moreover, leather products in service are constantly being stretched. For understanding the mechanical behavior of leather products under cyclic stretching, we measured the energy loss (hysteresis) during cyclic tensile tests using an advanced computing program. Data showed that hysteresis is the greatest for the first cycle, thereafter, the rest of hysteresis values are relatively unchanged. We also discovered that drum milling significantly decreases the hysteresis. This implies that a structural change occurs during milling, resulting in a removal of the residual stress that was introduced during the leather making process. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Presently, there is rising demand for the manufacture of chrome-free leathers. In this work, an attempt has been made to manufacture chrome-free garment leathers using a combination tannage based on tara tannin and co-tanning adjuncts viz., aluminum and gluteraldehyde. The shrinkage temperature of leathers using different combinations of tara and aluminum/ gluteraldehyde were found to be around 90oC. Tara-aluminum combination tanning system resulted in leathers with less softness and grain smoothness compared to tara-gluteraldehyde combination tanning system. The order of addition of gluteraldehyde had a significant influence on the organoleptic properties of the leathers. Gluteraldehyde pretreatment of tara tanned leathers gave better results when compared to post treatment. Tara at the 8% level was found to be optimum for combination tanning using 2% gluteraldehyde pretreatment. The gluteraldehyde-tara tanning system resulted in white leathers compared to the undyed chrome tanned crust leathers. The physical, organoleptic, dyeability and finishing characteristics of the crust leathers from both control and gluteraldehyde-tara tanning were comparable.
