Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Aluminium-27 solid state NMR spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the interactionat the molecular level of various aluminium based tanning salts with leather. High resolution and variable temperature Al-solid state NMR studies, combined with differential scanning calorimetry and kinetic studies of the shrinking of Al-tanned hide powder and sheepskin samples have clearly shown that shrinking is a kinetically controlled process, during which the synthetic crosslinks remain intact. The shrinkage temperature is determined by the size of the formed crosslinked macromolecular moieties which in turn depends on the kinetics stability of the interactions of the tanning agent with collagen. Kohl, Auteur Année de publication : 1989 Article en page(s) : p. 35-41 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : An investigation of surface heating effects on reinforced plastic tarpaulin covers under various conditions of exposure has been carried out. This investigation is relevant to the use of these types of cover materials in the transportation of green or antiseptic-treated hides or wet-blue hides.
A number of samples or tarpaulin ocver materials of differing colours and mass per unit area were obtained from a local supplier. These rectangular samples were exposed, horizontally, on a polystyrene board, during the course of a working day on three different days of varying weather conditions (sunny, sunny with cloud, sun with wind) during january. Surface temperatures were monitored using an electronic thermometer with contact probe.
Results showed a steady build-up in surface temperatures in each case to a maximum about midday. The largest temperature rises were recorded with black, brown, dard red and dark green materials in the vicinity of 65°C under sunny conditions. Lowest temperature maxima occurred with white tarpaulin material in the region of 45°C at midday. Surface temperatures were also influenced by ambient air temperature, air movement and obscuring cloud.
These results indicate that heating effects on tarpaulin covers are considerable under local summer conditions and maxima in some cases were in the vicinity of the denaturation temperature of raw (or antiseptic-treated) hides (65°C). Use of white orlight yellow covers is strongly recommended to minimise possible heat denaturationor incubation effects resulting in bacterial or fungal build-up in hides under these conditions. Use of aluminised, reflective cover material was also found effective in minimising heating effects on exposure.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OCqHBubhR3Kp4i3GeG6wivNtkRB-FSOO/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8816

Titre : A study of the grain layer using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) fitted with an energy dispersive X-ray analyser : Part 1 : The contribution to quality improvement in defective chrome tanned leathers Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : J. Cot, Auteur ; C. Aramon, Auteur ; M. Marsal, Auteur Année de publication : 1989 Article en page(s) : p. 42-46 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Woolled sheepskins showing partial hair-slip were extensively studied. This defect is detected in the "crust" state. Shearlings are first fully dechromed, subsequently de-woolled and chrome tanned. The influence of either a partial or complete beamhouse operation on the finished layer is examined.
On the grain layer, these leathers show modifications of the collagen, which show up in the form of irreversibly dried areas, different degrees of overheating (bare areas), residual epidermal layer and cementing materials (e.g. mucoids and mucopolysaccharides), as a consequence of not having had a proper liming and bating treatment.
By means of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled to an X-ray dispersive energy analyser (EDAX) it is possible to explore, first, the morphology of the grain layer and, secondly, the surface distribution of the inorganic elements, such as : sodium, potassium, calcium, chlorine, sulphur and chromium, especially the two latter elements. A quantitative analysis can carried out, in order to compare faulty and undamaged areas, by means of this advanced technique which makes it possible. :
a) to determine how the chrome is distributed on the surface,
b) to make a detailed "mapping" of the areas studied and to visualise them through photography, where both maximum and minimum accumulation of surface chrome can be observed,
c) to detect and diagnose similar defects in much smaller areas, to be found in leathers intended for processing into "nappa" (processing without either wool or hair) and in "wet-blue" imported leathers.
Once the nature of the defect becomes known and, provided that no irreversible alterations in the collagen protein have taken place, it will be possible to optimise processing in order either to eliminate or to reduce such a defect to negligible levels. In this manner, the quality of the end-product will be improved substantially.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/16TPegrXtY8TcLXo_Vc9WVIuJKc_JU301/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8826

The influence of one such fatliquor based on sardine fish oil has been studied when applied during pickling and chrome tanning in comparison with a cationic fatliquor and control procedure where in a conventional fatliquoring has been followed. The investigation has indicated that the introduction of an anionic acid-stable fatliquor during pickling and tanning results in the production of leathers with better feel and increased strength characteristics. StreptothricoseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the Sudan, 16,540 cattle were surveyed for bovine cutaneous streptothricosis and 48,000 were surveyed for bovine demodicosis. The incidence of cutaneous streptothricosis ws 4.5 %, while the incidence of bovine demodicosis among the total number of the animals (48,000) surveyed was 34-3 % and its incidence among slaughtered animals (1535) was 38.8 %. These results show that slaughterhouse surveys for demodicosis are more reliable than clinical surveys because many cattle with demodectic mange might have no visible cutaneous lesions and can only be detected after careful examination, flaying of the hides or during tanning.
In both cutaneous streptothricosis and demodicosis many forms of lesions, were encountered. The lesions were localised, confluent or generalised involving extensive areas or the wholehide of infested cattle.
Dermatophilus congolensis was demonstrated in smears and isolated in pure culture from affected material obtained from cattle infested with cutaneous streptothricosis. Numerous demodex bovis mites were demonstrated and isolated from caseated ("cheesy") waxy material obtained from demodectic mange lesions.
Severe and advanced histopathological changes were seen in skin sections from the lesions of both diseases. Leather sections from cutaneous stre
ptothricosis showed a badly damaged grain surface with many scars and depressions. The fibres were distorted and had lost their contour ; the whole thickness of the crust leather was fibrosed. Leather sections from bovine demodicosis showed, at the site of lesions, a ragged cavity with no definite boundaries. The fibres round the cavity were distorted, thinner than normal and compressed. In some sections, the grain surface was found to be separated from the corium.
Hides affected by cutaneous streptothricosis and demodicosis were gree-graded as rejects. During the tanning procedure, both diseases causes difficulty in soaking, plumping, splitting, scudding or shaving. At the site of lesions there was uneven distribution of chemicals leaving unsightly blemishes. Both diseases caused a marked reduction in the aesthetic appeal and cutting area of the leather. Cutaneous streptothricosis resulted in a course and rough grain surface and, in severely affected areas, the leather was pitted. Bovine demodicosis caused depressions, cavities or holes in the crust leather.
Cutaneous streptothricosis and bovine demodicosis caused a marked reduction in the tensile strength, apparent density and flexing endurance. Bovine demodicosis was found to have the more deleterious effect on crust leather because the percentage decrease in tensile strength, apparent density and flex endurance in the former disease was greater.
Hides affected by cutaneous streptothricosis and demodicosis were completely rejected or fetched low prices resulting in serious economic loss.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IvbDq-HWnYitKRRj0WlU3HiIUk9OUTj6/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8830

Juste à temps (gestion)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Never before has so much of our knowledge about production and inventory control been so throughly challenged. Seldom have our beliefs been so far out of step. The Japanese have been marching to a different drummer, and the difference in philosophy as well as results are impressive.
The first part of this presentation will inteoduce you to some of the changes in thinking required as we turn from traditional western production and inventory control beliefs and will help you begin to comprehend just-in-time philosophies.
The latter part of the presentation will concentration mainly on the introduction of JIT to one small section of our plant.
It is believed that it takes most people with a receptive attitude three to six months to begin to comprehend the major and subtle differences between batch and JIT manufacturing. My paper is thus not aimed at teaching you Just-In-Time management but merely to introduce the subject to you.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e1vQYLAQj8YIxGfaPzvgYewi09xxxGas/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8832

Load cell capacity in this apparatus is large (up to 12N) and three samples can be run simultaneously.
We have used this apparatus to measure changes in the thermal stability of collagen in red deer skin as a consequence of their method of preservation. Reproducible HIT curves wre obtained after raising the temperature from 25°C to 95°C at a rate of 1.0°C/min. Changes in the collagen stability were evident when different treatments were compared.
Data obtained from HIT curves should find useful application in leather technology since it provides rapid and precise information on the stable state of collagen reticulation in skin samples.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1buD9uX0PzLi-O_IB9RmXo2C8Sxyu8TiS/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8833

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A simple method is desribed for measuring numericallythe softness of leathers based on compressibility. This method could be of value in the assessment of the quality of leather objectively and semiquantitatively. Current practices in the assessment and grading of leathers, at least in the case of softness of gloving and garments leahters, are based on subjective methods. Unlike the case of sole leathers, the development of instrumental methods for measuring flexibility, rigidity, bending, compresssion, etc. for the evaluation of soft leahters, for example grain garment, has so far been difficult. Further, many of the testing procedures for leather evaluation are based on destructive techniques. This paper presents a non-destructive method attempts to define the degree of softness of leather using an easily measured parameter such as compressibility. The method which seems suited especially for light leathers consists of compressing the leather surfaces laterally in between two flat objects with an increasing load. The changes in thickness in a given time were analysed as a function of the load intervals. Compression indices thus obtained seem to correlate with the tactile assessment of softness of grain garment leathers, with higher negative slope angles being associated with softer leathers. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Extraction with amyl alcohol of aqueous fractions ofthe powdered fruit husk of parkia clappertoniana, earlier acid-hydrolysed and extracted with ethyl acetate, yielded a maximum of five anthocyanidins : petunidin, pelargonidin, malvidin, delphinidin and cyanidin. Characterisation of these compounds for the first time, in this potentially significant tanning material of tropical origin, was accomplished by means of reactions to characteristic tests, paper chromatography and co-chromatography and by applying standard spectrophotometric techniques with the aid of authentic markers. Titre : Mathematical model of soaking. Part I Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : A. Blaha, Auteur ; Karel Kolomaznik, Auteur Année de publication : 1989 Article en page(s) : p. 136-140 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this paper we describe the construction of a mathematical model of washing and of soaking salted raw hide materials. The methodology corresponds to the use of the chemical engineering methods in tannery research. The possibilities of binding the sodium chloride to hide substance, the mechanics of sodium chloride transfer in the hide under the conditions of swelling taking place during the process, and the washing out of soluble proetins have been considered.
The mathematical model is proposed on the basis of the following presumptions : the sodium chloride sorption of the hide substance is small and may be simply neglected, the mass transfer in the hide under laboratory conditions occurs by a diffusion mechanism. The diffusion occurs along the actual pore length and the same is very little altered by swelling.
A lower velocity of sodium chloride removal is observed in the case of a hide with high degree of dry matter, because of the closed structure due to agglutination resulting from over-drying, and also in the case of a hide with increased quantities of fat on the flesh side.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1__jE21A9ZJHWWBLCoI8WlZOIKl8HU-aH/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8843

Tannage Résumé : Extensive studies have been carried out on combination tannages involving basic aluminium sulphate (aluminium sulphate, masked with citrate anion) and bagaruwa (acacia nilotica var. adansonii). The use of aluminium as one of the tanning agents was found to impart improved physical properties. Amongst the combination systems evaluated, a bagaruwa pretannage followed by retannage with basic aluminium sulphate was found to produce stronger leathers.
Nigerian tanneries can largely substitute chrome with the indigenously available aluminium tanning agent, the benefits being to reduce the import of chrome and to reduce the pollution due to chrome.
Adoption of bagaruwa-aluminium combination tannages in other tanneries in the sub-region where only bagaruwa is available locally, will help to limit chrome pollution and may prove beneficial costwise. In addition to the above benefits achievable by mechanised tanneries, this technique will pave the way to upgrading the crust leathers produced by traditional tanners using only bagaruwa tannins.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1smPoDntBvdcVPPn_VGBkVgF6qvaIf3OH/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8852

She's intended for measurement of the thickness of the surface coating applied to leathers of all types, measured under zero compression.
Either a cut perpendicular to the finished surface is made through a specimen of leather, or a microscopic section is cut using a microtome. The cut or section is then examined by means of a microscope and the thickness of the coating measured.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XW08Q7R4EEMGcHV59xZdRQa8As-lykB1/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8854

Tannage Résumé : A set of chrome recycling trials have been carried out, to determine the extent of the influence that chrome recycling has on the colour and properties of the resultant leathers.
Initially chrome recycle liquor was obtained from a commercial tannery that had been continuously chrome recycling for a period of 18 months. A total of 8 cycles were then carried out at LIRI, using 4 sides per cycle, with the matching sides being processed by a conventional chrome tannage.
The chrome contents of the matching wet blue sides were very similar and the influence that chrome recycling had on the final leather colour, dyed medium brown, was from no difference (66 %) of sides) to slightly lighter (34 %).En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e-lRK8hp0ztgzSb4JuMkh1M3KPzFcHxH/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8855

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Mineral tanning practices have become increasingly more common in recent years and there is increasing concern that chromium discharged in the effluent after chrome tanning may cause ecological problems. Keratin hydrolysate (KH) prepared from keratinous material like poultry feather and tannery hair is found to tanning and rechroming operations. In chrome tanning KH was added in the tanning bath after basification and in rechroming, KH was added in the same float either before or after rechroming. Control sets without KH were run simultaneously under identical conditions. All of the experiments were done on goat skins.
Total chrome in the exhaust liquor and in the leather both before and after addition of KH was estimated for each set. Data on physical parameters of leather were also measured.
It is also seen that the use of KH helps to reduce the percentage of syntans and fillers required for retanning. Using the data obtained from laboratory tests the process was scaled up in our tannery permitting us to assess the commercial aspects of the use of KH in leather processing.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wqtvm0tMcKIoYkUpuraX8PHCgP4LcxQj/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8856

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The validity and application of the mathematical model of the soaking process under actual production conditions has been investigated. Four full scale soaking tests were run in mixers with an effective capacity of 12m3. The measured values obtained have confirmed the validity of the diffusion mathematical model and the possibility of its application to process optimisation. The kinetics of the process depend significantly upon the dyness of the raw hide - the process is conclusively slower for hides with high dry substance value.
