Titre : A simple approach to leather process investigation part 5 - The correction of defects in paste dried leather by variants in retannage and fatliquoring Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ibrahim Elrufai abuelhassan, Auteur ; A. G. Ward, Auteur ; S. Wolstenholme, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 1-16 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : In part 4 (JSLTC, 1984, 68, 159) the effect of the main techniques of leather drying, free hanging, toggling, paste drying and vacuum drying, on the properties of side upper leather was studied. The leather was prepared by the Modified Standard Process (MSP) as described in part 3 (JSLCT, 1984, 68, 125), except for the drying variants. The leathers that had been dried by processes involving stretching (especially toggling and paste drying) were adversely affected as regards break and were also modified in temper. They showed substantially reduced distension to grain crack (lastometer) and elongation to rupture. The present investigation examined how far retannage and modified fatliquoring can restore the leather properties to the generally satisfactory standards of MSP leather itself. Preliminary experiments resulted in the selection of a combination retannage made up to Tanigan OS, Retingan R7 and mimosa extract. This retannage was used together with normal and enhanced levels of fatliquoring. The combined action of retanning and increased fatliquoring appeared, from the first trials, to be effective in improving the break characteristics and giving a softer leather. It failed, however, to achieve a satisfactory distension to grain crack in the lastometer teset. A trial was carried out on retannage and modified fatliquoring, using the full range of subjective and physical tests that were employed in previous parts of this work. The results fully confirmed the previous tentative conclusions that the subjective properties could be adjusted to match standard MSP leathers. Retannage had no significant effect on the grain brittleness arising from paste drying but the extra fatliquoring reduced somewhat the grain brittleness, in comparison with MSP leather, as assessed by the distension to grain crack (lastometer). The final sections of the paper describe studies on the weight, area and thickness of the sides, using data from the various packs studied in parts 3, 4 and 5. The paper concludes with a summary of findings collected from the entire investigation (Parts 1-5). Note de contenu : - The purpose and effects of retannage and fatliquoring.

However, the amount of literature published or available on the chemistry of syntans is very limited. Generally, commercial products are first developed and marketed without publishing the details concerning their chemistry. As these products are tailor-made and meant for specific end-use, studies on their chemistry are very essential so that improvements in their properties can be made. It is with the object of understanding the chemical nature of syntans that studies have been carried out on the cehmistry of those base on the mixed condensation of sulphonated and unsolphonated novolacs. The results are reported in the present communication. The preparation, properties and utilisation of the syntan have been given in our previous communications. Note de contenu : - Experimental.

Titre : Theory and practice of modern chamois leather production Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : J. H. Sharphouse, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 29-43 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The bulk of chamois leather is used as wash leather for cleaning windows, car bodies and similar surfaces where its particular merit is its softness, high water absorbence and "wringability" ; some eight million skins are processed annually.
The traditional method ofmaking chamois leather was to impregnate the damp flesh splits of sheepskins with cod liver oil in fulling stocks and then hang them up in warm stoves to allow oxidation of the oil to occur, the products of which reaction had a tanning action. These two processes might be repeated two or three times until a satisfactory leathering was achieved.
Surplus oil was removed by hydraulic pressing (to yield a by-product known as Dégras or Moellon) followed by a final wash in warm alkaline water. The skins were then hung to dry and finished. The process is dirty and labour-intensive. For a production of 1000 skins per day, 75 mean hours were needed and 20 000 ft2 of warm stove area, with a high fire risk.
The modern system described herein and largely innovated by tha author as commercial process in Europe and the USA, loads the damp flesh splits into a large rotating drum along with the cod liver oil. Whilst this is rotating, a controlled blast of warm air is blown in, which effects some drying of the skins and suitable oxidation of the cod oil, so that complete tannage may be achieved in 12 h. Subsequently, surplus oil is removed by a solvent degreasing plant to yield a dry, tanned chamois leather.
The merits of this system are a reduction to nine man hours only, elimination of the warm stoves, a big improvement in cleanliness of working conditions, a yield of superior anhydrous Dégras, and the elimination of effluent problemsn incidental to the use of alkaline, aqueous wash liquors. The practical development of these systems was carried out by the author over a number of years and the back-up research performed under his guidance by a number of his students in the former Leather Department of the College of Technology, Northampton (now the Leathersellers' Centre, Nene College).Note de contenu : - The nature and characteristics of chamois leather.

Tannage Résumé : The tanning potency of titanium in comparison with other conventional mineral tanning agents, viz. chromium and aluminium as well as vegetable tanning (wattle extract) and syntan (syntan DLE) is assessed. This article deals with experiments conducted on straight as well as different combination tanning systems (pre-tannage, retannage and simultaneous tannage) involving titanium and these tanning agents. Among the straight mineral tannages, the fixation of titanium is found to be greater than that of chromium and much greater than that of aluminium. In combination tannages involving titanium and chromium as well as titanium and aluminium, titanium could well be used for pre-tannage as well as simultaneous tannage rather than for retannage. With vegetable tannin and syntan, pre-tannage by titanium is found to be more suitable than retannage and simultaneous tannage. Note de contenu : 2. Tannage Résumé : In the course of a modified tanning process, a permanent fastness to washing is acquired by garment leather. The results are presented of studies on a tanning process introducing the fatliquoring agents together with tanning agents into the skin tissue and binding them with collagen. Attempts were made to synthesise and to apply the bifunctional agents. Chromium nitrate and palmitic acid were used for preparation of a tanning/fatliquoring agent. The resulting product, most likely a chromium complex with fatty acid, is soluble in isopropanol. Processed leather exhibited a high fat content (about 5 %) fixed in the skin tissue. Chemical bonding of fatliquoring and tanning agents with collagen led to the required fastness to washing. Note de contenu : 1. Synthesis of the tanning and fatliquoring.

Tannage Résumé : During chromium tanning of wooly sheepskins, weathered areas of the wool take up chromium and the resultant green colour persists through to the finished product. Testing of skins using both recycled bath and single-bath situations after additions of aluminium sulphate to the tanning bath has shown reduction of the chromium content and colour of the wool on the tanned skins. Limited physical testing of these skins has aslo shown no change in properties tested compared with skins tanned without aluminium added, with the exception of lower tear strength. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The history of the discovery and early use of chromium chemicals is summarised. The application of chromium salts by wrrington (1841), Cavallin (1845) and DeKercado (1851) is described bridfly. Patented processes for the use of chromium salts in the leather trades during th 1860s and 1870s are reviewed. The world wide, commercial-scale operation of the Heinzerling process (1878) is outlined. It is shown that the traditional belief, that chrome taning was invented by Knapp (1858) and not developed practically until the two-bath tannage of Schultz (1884) and the one-bath tannage of schultz (1884) and the one-bath method of Dennis (1893) is over-simplistic. It is suggested that the development of chrome tanning in the nineteenth century came from a steady accumulation of knowledge and experience and was not the result of a series of breakthroughs by individual inventors. [article]
Titre : Water urethanes in finishing Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : P. Rothwell, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 105-109 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The title of this paper contains two words which I believe to be important and topical, namely water and urethanes.
Water means water dilutable as opposed to solvent dilutable and has implications as far as cost, health and the ecology are concerned. Although water is not free, it is certainly much cheaper than solvents and is in more abundant supply. It is obtained simply by turning on a tap and can be disposed of through the sewage system. On negative factor is that more energy is required to dry water than solvent, making fuel costs higher and the capital cost of drying equipment greater.
Urethanes are a group of polymers which have been growing in importance especially during the last ten years. The unique property of urethanes is their balance of toughness and stretch. Films of urethanes which have excellent abrasion resistance retain their elasticity over a wide temperature range which other polymers do not, e.g. acrylics of comparative softness are less tough.
Since our society became conscious of the cost and ecological factors involved in the use of solvents, one of the more important finishing objectives has been to produce AWS (All Water Systems). By that I mean true solvent-free systems, i.e. those not containing significant quantities of solvent either in the base coat to aid penetration and flow, or in the top coat as part of the emulsion system as with water dilutable lacquer emulsions.
Another example of necessary change concerns the tolerance limit value of ethyl glycol, which has recently been reduced from 50 to 5 ppm. Its use is now questioned by users and, in particula, workers, their unions and the health and safety executive. I believe that theuse of urethanes in bottom and, now, in top oats is helping us to achieve true AWS finishes.
Another important area concerns, the fashionable aspect of our industry today. By fashion, I mean colour, texture, feel and handle which appeal to the senses of the buyer. Leather clothing and furniture are in fashion as are clothing accessories, belts, bags and, not the least, shoes. These are co-ordinated with clothing packages and are retailed in the new-style, trendy, high street shops. The use of the new urethane polymers can help to produce suitable new leathers for these up market goods.Note de contenu : HISTORICAL BACKGROUND.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This study takes a look into the factors affecting the efficient operation of the Evaporation Pond system used for the disposal of tannery effluent. Guidelines are given for improving the efficiency of the evaporation pond operation which will minimise grounds for complaints due to the occurence of anaerobic conditions. The climatic conditions for the region are very important factors in making the system economically viable, i.e. the evaporation rate. The results for monitoring, over a period of 16 months, one such system which has been in continuous operation for 15years are evaluated. These results show that the pond system is a cost-effective and low technology method for handling tannery effluent. The disadvantages are the possible production of smell and corrosive hydrogen sulphide, the land area required for the ponds and the fact that the saline wastewater cannot, at present, be recycled back into the tannery. These factors must be balanced against the cost, high technology and close supervision required for more modern methods of wastewater management, which, however, have the potential for water recycling. Tannage Résumé : The use of sequential treatments has been tested in an attempt to develop an aluminium tannage of high stability which might be used to replace chrome-tanning. Treatments based on various combinations using aluminium, chromium and zirconium compounds and pyromellitic acid have been surveyed in a series of "screening" experiments using lamb intestine. On treatment, involving successive treatments with zirconium sulphate, pyromellitic acid and then aluminium sulphate, gave a product with exceptionnaly high shrinkage temperature (up to 128°C) and high stability to dyebath conditions. Based on this, tanned leather with similar high stabiility was produced using both sheepskin and cattle hide and this has demonstrated the possible application of this system for development of a white aluminium-based tannage with suitable stability for general application. Titre : Fungicide evaluation for the protection of wet blue hides Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Alan E. Russell, Auteur ; S. Pinchuck, Auteur ; Desmond R. Cooper, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 135-143 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Details are given of various laboratory methods for assessing fungicides for the protection of wet blue hides and evaluating storage margins in production wet blue leathers. Using these methods, a survey of nine commercial fungicide formulations applied to wet blue cuttings has been carried out. Products examined included a number previously found to fall into the low, medium and higher dosage levels (concentrations extending from 0.01 to 0.5 % m/v in 100 % float) to ensure four-month, residual protection. Experimental factors varied including fungicide addition point (pickle or rinse addition) and post-treatment wet blue handling (draining, rinsing, sammying and splitting). The treatment variations examined were aimed at gaining insight into uptake and penetration of the fungicide was found to give markedly improved prediction of field performance. Pickle additionof fungicide was found to give markedly improved storage protection in a number of cases. Post-treatment handling tended to reduce storage protection in effective products only at higher application levels in pickle addition. Decreases due to rinsing and sammying were comparable but tended to be greater after splitting, depending on the degree of fungicide penetration. Post-treatment effects were less marked in rinse application. The results indicate that more detailed assessment of fungicide effectiveness under various conditions in laboratory surveys can provide a better basis for prediction of field performance. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Fashion in footwear is ever-changing and often leads to compromises in quality of shoes and footwear. In other words, the design and performance characteristics are rarely paid adequate attention. It is not surprising that the published literature on shoe and footwear design with respect to performance characteristics is scanty (Lokanatham et al., Maddams, and Maeser which deal with the lastability method method, the seam durability tests using various threads inupper closing. To the best of our knowledge there is no published data available on the effect of decorations on the shoe uppers on the mechanical properties of the upper's such as the tensile and lasting strengths.
In the present study, the effects of single, double and zigzag decorative stitches on the tensile strength, elongation at break and lasting strength have been investigated.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1W2YssRi_YjlcwUF3bOBkUTrz4BbUOA76/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9413

The influence of pigskin alkalisation on destruction of skin grain during depilation with pancreatic enzymes Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Barbara Felicjaniak, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 160-163 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The enzymatic depilation of pigskins is a dangerous stage ofleather production due to hydrolysis of grain and deeper layers of ermis The extent of this destruction depends on the activity of the enzymes being used for depilation and on the quality of cured skins. Through adequate modification of a skin substrate, e.g. by increasing the resistance of grain microstructures to enzymatic proteolysis, the grain hydrolysis may be counteracted. This topic has long been discussed and one of the methods discussed is an alkaline swelling of skins by means of liming. Comparative tests produced a better quality of skins when depilated with pancreatic enzymes after pre-liming than when depilated without pre-liming. The liming was introduced into enzymatic depilation as a preparatory phase. The influence of alkali swelling (liming) has not been fully evaluated. In Heidemann's work, it was found that alkali swelling of skins intensifies the destruction of collagen by trypsin and influences the increase of damage to grain being affected by bacteria during the skin-curing process.
This negative opinion on pre-liming does not confirm our ealier histochemical examinations. The results of these examinations enabledus to find the higher resistance to proetolysis of grain microstructures of skins pre-limed than of skins depilated with pancreas enzymes without pre-liming. The reduction and even elimination of skingrain enzymatic destruction by means of skin pre-liming could not beutilised in practice due to a simultaneous immunization of bristles. Changes in the physico-chemical properties of keratin during liming made bristles insoluble in sodium sulphide. This rendered impossible a chemical removal of residual bristles, left on skins depilated by enzymes.
On the basis of earliler experiments, it seemed advisable to develop a milder method of alkalisation, which would give the optimum quality bristles and of skins depilated by enzymes. This is the subject of the present series of trials.Note de contenu : - Characteristics of pancreatic preparation.

The mechanism of the alkalising action has not been identified and, therefore, the application of the method to enzymes with another specificity than that of the pancreatic one required an additional check.
In the present work, the effectiveness of alkalisation was evaluated in application to the Polish commercial preparation of bacterial origin, Proteopol BP. The use of the commercial preparation in the tests resulted from an assumed objective, which was the development of an industrial method for skin depilation. The studies on eluted and purified enzymes were not the subject of the present work.Note de contenu : - Characteristics of the enzymatic preparation, proteopol BP.

Langerwerf, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 166-174 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : An outline is given of the environmental aspects of the application of chromium in the leather industry. Resutls obtained with established and newly developed techniques show that the yearly chromium consumption of the global leather industry could probably be reduced from about 65 to 25 ktons or less. Techniques for the precipitation of chromium and several other metals and those to recover chromium from sludges and other leather wastes, are described. With these techniquees an almost complete recycling of chromium is made possible in principle. Any tanning agent must be considered suspect from a toxicological point of view. More thorough toxicological research on water-soluble derivates of chromium and on other tanning materials is ncesssary before techniques to minimise environmental risks fully can be developed. This paper offers an overview of research in this field at the Institute for Leather ans Shoe Research, TNO, Waalwijk, the Netherlands.
