With the onset of sexual maturity in bulls after 12 months of age, accompanying changes in leather physical properties were apparent and tensile strength showed a decline particularly in Friesland bull leathers. These changes in hide physical properties appear to parallel increases in the level of natural crosslinking of the collagen molecular structure during ageing and maturation. Main differences between the two breeds studied were that Afrikaner animals were superior in terms of hide and leather yield whereas the leather of Friesland cattle was qualitatively superior. Peau humaineIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Skin samples obtained from various parts of the animal and human bodies have been investigated using the electron microscope techniques. This study shows that the structure of the entire skin of an animal is not of homogeneous nature. The variations followed a definite pattern suggesting a general classification of the various parts of the skin into flexible and non-flexible areas. From the electron microscopical observations, it may be summarised that some common features of skin samples obtained from flexible areas were as follows : presence of individual fibrils, considerable broken fibrils, increased periodicity and decreased diameter of the fibrils, sparse distribution of collagen fibrils in sections, presence of low amounts of amorphous materials, occurrence of circular structure on the surface of the skin. On the contrary non-flexible areas have the following common features : tendency in fibrils to form compact bundles, considerable amounts of intact fibril, comparatively decreased periodicity and increased diameter of the fibrils, close packing of collagen fibrils in sections, presence of large amounts of amorphous materials, and presence of figures resembling triangles and rhombuses on the surface of the skin.

Water-treatment chemists have made use of various chemical reactions and biological processes to purify water from cations such as ammonium, magnesium and calcium, and common anions such as phosphates, nitrates and sulphate, but sodium cations and chloride anions are quite intractable, and pals through effluent treatment plants unchanged. There is therefore considerable pressure to limit the discharge of these ions anywhere inland in South Africa, so as not to raise the salinity of our main rivers. It is obvious that control of the discharge of sodium chloride itself is the very first step in limiting sodium and chloride ions. We can derive some idea of the potential salt run-off from this studv.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : South African abattoir, curer and tannery statistics 1975
