This is certainly true of the leather industry which has, over the years, shown great changes. It is especially the case when we ewamine the ever-increasing role played by leather in the world of fashion. Thanks to the efforts of enlightened tanners, leather has become an accepted material in the high fashion equation. This has however, led to increasing demands from designers and consumers for the various leathers to be supplied in an ever-increasing range of fashion shades. Fortunately leather in tis many guises is generally a forgiving substrate for dyeing in that it can be coloured with a wide range of products. Over 1,300 dyes are listed in the Colour Index as "Dyes for leather" and over 900 of them are acid dyes. All this would appear to offer the tanner a limitless ability to select products for a wide range of shades,and if only the shade is considered this is true. However, as we all well know, it is never only just the shade which is required. A recent survey of tanners around the world came up with an average breakdown of shades in production at major tanneries. As expected black is important at 52 % but almost half is brown 24 % plus other colours (24 %). Thus almost half of leather dyed is dyed into brown and colours and the expectation from designers and consumers is for an ever growing selection of bright fashionable shades in all materials including leather. i.e. Leather must also be able to be produced in a wide ranger of fashion shades. Aiming at decreasing the volume of effluents from unhairing and at optimizing the amount of products used in such a process in a tannery producing upholstery leather, a study concerning recycling was made of the effluents from a hair-saving "chemical unhairing" process that is in current use. By means of trials both at laboratory scale on a pilot plant, the recirculation of an effluent ("mixed liquor") - including unhairing liquid wastes and waste water from the first discontinuous washing - was used at the stages of alkaline conditioning, hair immunization, unhairing and liming. Fifteen unhairing trials were performed at the CITEC's pilot plant with 7 bovine hides in each cycle ; when the pelt stage was reached, the process was continued at the tannery. The results obtained led to the following conclusions : . An adaptation of the recycling technique to a hair-saving process is applicable at the liming, immunization and unhairing stages ; . The features of the "re-circulated leather" are similar to those of the finished upholstery product made by the tannery ; . This recycling technique allows for an 88 % reduction in the volume of unhairing wastes and for 43 and 20 % reduction in the consumption of lime and sodium sulphide, respectively. Tannage Résumé : The use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is demonstrated to be an important alternative to the empirical and laborious traditional methods for tannin analysis of the bark of black wattle (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.), particularly when large numbers of samples have to be processed rapidly. A set of 98 ground wattle bark samples was used to calibrate the output from a NIRS instrument, taking absorption readings every 2 nm between 1100 nm and 2498 nm. The spectral data from this calibration set was then statistically manipulated using multivariate techniques to generate calibration models. These calibrations were then applied to a separate set of 79 bark samples which, for validation purposes, were also analysed by wet chemistry. The tannin analysis predictions compared favourably with the wet chemistry results on these samples, with standard errors of determination of 1.2%, 0.3% and 1.1% for tans, non-tans and total extractives respectively.
