The various factors involved in the process were also investigated. The new process considerably reduces the level of pollutants in the effluent, and is suitable for large-scale operation. Complete exhaustion of the tanning baths, together with much higher chromium binding was observed with the organic medium than with the traditional processes carried out in aqueous media. Results obtained on laboratory models have shown that this technology leads to a significant reduction in the total tanning time needed for properly tanned leathers having a satisfactory hydrothermal stability and a smooth grain. The tanning liquors (both basic and acid) are recycled after simple adjustment of parameters, this is taker as being necessary because of ecological pressures. We have investigated the changes in red deer skin due to ageing and oxygen by isothermal isometric tension analysis. Red deer skin was incubated for periods of up to 12 months in the presence of varying oxygen concentration (0.2 to 42 %). Hydrothermal isometric tension analysis indicated that changes in the properties of red deer skin with age were more significant than those that could be attributed to oxygen. WHile high oxygen concentration appeared to influence tissue properties, greater changes were evident after in vitro ageing than in high oxygen concentration.
