The load applied is typically in the order of 500 g thereby not causing any damage to the leathers. In trials the gauge has been shown to give a good correlation between measurements and softness as graded by hand and has proved to be as reliable as any destructive method presently used for measuring leather softness. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : An ion-pair reversed phase HPLC method is described to quantitatively determine individual chromium complexes in chrome tanning solutions. Separations are achieved within 12-40 minutes in contrast to 6-7 hours with the currently used ion-exchange method. Sample sizes of aboutone microlitre, as opposed to 10 millilitres with the ion-exchange method, are adequate for a separation, thus producing minimum waste. As described below in detail, precautions are taken in order to minimise any perturbation to complex equilibrai that exist in chrome liquor so that the true composition of chrome liquor is obtained. Since the analysis can be performed within a very short time, monitoring the composition of tanning solution with time is possible without having to freeze-dry samples from each stage. The method described here is extremely flexible and simple requiring only a basic HPLC system and a reversed phase column which is temporarily modified to an "ion-exchange" mode during separations but which is regenerated to the reversed phase mode at the end of the separations. However, their employment can yield an important economic saving since any method of optimization would enable us to obtain maximum information with the minimum number of experiments and to determine the significance of the different variables and their interdependence. The effect of three masking (complexing) agents : sodium oxalate, sodium citrate and sodium orthophtalate on 33 % basic chromium salt (conventional tanning agent) was studied. The optimum concentrations of each of these masking agents, their synergistic effect and the corresponding shrinkage temperature and exhaustion of the tanning liquors were determined.
