Tannage Résumé : The options for tanning chemistries in the next century are reviewed. The future of the industry lies with chrome tanning, but the use of chrome must be managed, to minimize the environmental impact ; much of this technology is well known in the art. However, it is prudent to prepare for change. In considering any alternative, the problem is to reproduce the high hydrothermal stability and retain the versatility of chromium (III) salts.
Semi-metal processing, particularly using aluminium (III) salts is established technology, but improvements may be made by adopting a new approach, using titanium (III) chemistry with targeted tanning species of hydrolyzable vegetable tannins.
Organic tanning, avoiding all metals, may be environmentally preferred : such processes may be based either on plant polyphenols or on synthetic organic polymers. High hydrothermal stability is achieved by a combination of condensed plant polyphenol and organic, aldehydic crosslinker. This is the organic, condensed tannin analogue of semi-metal tannage, in which nex plant extracts may be useful. It has been shown that equally high shrinkage temperatures can be reached by using synthetic resins with the right dimensions, crosslinked by aldehydic or active hydroxy compounds.
A review of established and developing tanning chemistries has allowed a new theory of the origin of hydrothermal stability to be proposed : it is based on the degree of structure conferred to collagen by the tanning species. Taken together with improving computer models of collagen structure, prediction of future high stability tannages is within sight.Note de contenu : - CHROME TANNING
