Experiments were performed on naturally and artificially aged leather. All gas chromatograms are similar, with high amounts of the classical amino acids together with a great number of others at low concentration of witch several were identified as : alpha-aminobutyric acid, béta-alanine, pyroglutamic acid, allo-isoleucine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), dehydropoline (cis-3-HYP and cis-4-HYP), 6-aminohexanoic acid, ornithine and alpha-aminoadipic acid (AAD). To evaluate how much artificial aging affects the release of breakdown products, and to compare it to natural aging, semiquantitative and comparative analysis were performed on four "new" amino acids. We calculated and studied the evolution of the following peaks area ratios : GABA/dPRO, cis-4-HYP/trans-4-HYP, dPRO/PRO and AAD/dPRO. Our results confirm the hypothesis that amino acids are first transformed into breakdown products in the form of new amino acids, which are then transformed into other breakdown products or amino acids. Titre : Non-ammonia deliming of cattle hides with magnesium lactate Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Karel Kolomaznik, Auteur ; A. Blaha, Auteur ; David G. Bailey, Auteur ; Maryann M. Tannage Résumé : Due to effluent limitations there is a great deal of interest in the tanning industry to find a replacement for ammonium salts currently used in the deliming process. Considerable attention has been paid to magnesium salts, in particular to magnesium sulfate or magnesium chloride, either as the salt alone or in combination with various acids. Leather resulting from deliming with these magnesium salts is comparable and in some ways superior to leathers delimed with ammonium sulfate. This paper proposes the use of magnesium lactate for non-ammonia deliming of white hides. Magnesium lactate combines the advantages of deliming with lactic acid (increased solubility over the calcium salt of the acid) and the advantages of magnesium salts (improved grain quality of the finished leather). The detailed procedures and the results of tannery scale evaluations using magnesium lactate are presented. An inexpensive source of this chimical is described, prepared from a dairy industry waste effluent.
