Tannage Résumé : The influence of the liposome suspensions (multilamellar vesicles, MLV) as carrier of dye on the dyeing of tanned leather with acid dyes has been studied. For this purpose, liposomes made with egg phosphatidylcholine and containing the acid dye Verde Luce (C.I. Acid Green 5), triarylmethane derivative, have been investigated. The investigations of the physicochemical stability of liposomes have been undertaken through the measurements of mean particle size distribution of phospholipidic vesicles after preparation and possible hydrolysis of phospholipid molecules, studying the alteration of fatty acids that built of the liposomic structures. The kinetic aspects of dye exhaustion on tanned leathers at different phospholipid concentration have been investigated also. The use of liposomes in dyeing process inhibit slightly dye exhaustion improving the smoothness of the treated leather. Tannage Résumé : Turkish sole leather, chrome tanned leather, new shoes, used shoes and skin swabs from the feet of people who wore the shoes were all examined in this study for yeast. Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Candida guilliermondii, Candida lusitaniae, Candida pseudotropicalis, Candida krusei, Candida famata, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Rhodotorulla species, Exophila jeanselmei, Phaeococcomyces cerevisiae, Aureobasidium pullulans, Geotrichum candidum, and Wallemia sebi were isolated from these various leather specimens and people's feet. The flora found on used shoes and that of the samples taken from people's feet were very similar as expected. Somewhat surprising, however, was that a very similar flora was found on new shoes. This suggests strongly that contamination of new shoes occurs during processing and storage. This contamination is a possible cause of mycotic infection of the individuals who purchase these shoes. Sole leather and chrome tanned leather contained fewer yeast strains and these also might contribute to the contamination of shoes. Candida albicans, Rhodotorula species, Candida parapsilosis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida guilliermondii were the most common species isolated. Tannage Résumé : A new acrylic technology is now capable of delivering polymers that have very low stiffness yet are tough and low tack. Consequently, leather finished with these basecoat polymers maintain a soft hand. This is an important development because the leather industry is showing an increasing demand for soft leathers. Clearly, soft leathers must begin with the appropriate retan/fatliquoring to deliver the desired temper out of the crust. But for those leathers that are finished, and most are, there is increasing pressure to maintain the crust softness. This calls for finishes that do not firm the leather but at the same time are not tacky. Because this new technology produces acrylates that are low tack, basecoats exhibit excellent plate release and processability, in addition they mold exceptionally well when embossed. End-use application of a polymer with such performance characteristics appears to almost universal. Leather with the greatest finish add-on (splits an auto upholstrery) exhibit the highest level of temper control vs. standard finishes. However, commercial acceptances in furniture upholstery, garment leather and side leather for shoes and accessories have demonstrated widespread utility of this technology.
This technology will be referred to as "SB" technology and currently has applications only for basecoats.
