Tannage Résumé : Many tanners and suppliers have viewed aluminium tannages as a replacement for chrome-based leathers.The regulatory agencies continue to rank trivalent chrome as a toxicant regardless of the literature which they have caused to be accumulated and perhaps literature they have not considered.Chromium is an essential trace element for mammalian in life. Correspondingly, the regulatory agencies have not given serious consideration to the danger of the aluminium which have been documented in specific publications. Aluminium is not an essential element for mammalian life; indeed, it can accumulate progressively in the body- leading to death.This paper provides data comparisons that are deemed to be of concern to our industry as it strives to follow a sound pathway down the regulatory road. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : These days, ecology is a matter of top priority in many countries.Even in areas where less importance is placed on the environment,it is only a matter of time before the problems of effluent, exhaust air and waste disposal will have to be solved before permission is given for the operation of production facilities.Some industrialized countries already have extremely stringent statutory regulations on pollution of ground water and air.The leather industry,which is dependent on the use of a wide variety of chemicals,is particularly hard hit by such regulations,in both the wet processing and finishing sectors.This paper looks at finishing systems that have little or no impact on the air. The main ecological problem connected with leather finishes is the use of organic solvents,especially in "effect" finishes and topcoats,where they are needed to dissolve the polymers used.Once the solvents have fulfilled their function in the application of the finish,they have to be removed from the finish layer and the leather.Whether this occurs in the spraying booth,the drying tunnel or by evaporation in air, all the solvents used are released into the air over a given time. Instead of cleaning the waste air the most promising alternative is the use of aqueous systems. How far advanced are aqueous systems and what are the main problems that still have to be solved? Tannage Résumé : At the extremes of conventionnal tannery conditions, in terms of applied heat and basification procedure,resulting chrome leathers can exhibit anomalies in hydrothermal stability: leathers which high shrinkage temperatures,well above 100°C, shrink when held in boiling water for 5 minutes and the effect depends on whether the leather is tested dry or is prewetted.Anomalies appear if the leathers are aged at ambient temperature and most,but not all, are not present if the leathers had been aged at 60°C.
