Tannage Résumé : Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the phase transition of hide and chrome-tanned leather at different moisture contents. In both products phase transition occurs over a wide temperature range and is irreversible. The melting temperature of hide increases progressively from about 66°C at 200% moisture content to 221°C at approximately 0% moisture content, while the melting temperature of chrome leather remains almost constant at about 105°C down to about 30% moisture content and then increases sharply to 204°C at about 0% moisture content. It is significant, however, that at all moisture contents below 30%, the melting temperature of hide is higher than that of chrome leather and (according to published research data) higher than that of vegetable-tanned and formaldehyde-tanned leathers. The feasibility of adapting present commercial shoe-manufacturing technology to the utilization of non-chrome leathers is discussed in light of the research findings obtained. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : For incineration of chrome leather wastes by non-polluting methods, we installed an experimental dry distillation furnace consisting of primary and secondary incinerating chambers with an alkaline scrubber and a water-warming boiler. Investigation were performed on incinerating conditions to reduce the toxic gas components, and on the effect of the scrubber on removing them; the incinerated residue including chrome was roasted for chrome recovery. SO2 was removed completely by the alkaline scrubber. By step-wise raised temperature incineration NOx and dust were suppressed to acceptable levels of pollution control. It was ascertained that the recovered ashes could be applied to the process of reparing bichromate as a raw material. In the meantime, all types of leather ranging from shoe-upper leather through fancy leather to upholstery leather are involved in this trend. Since coverage of grain damage by finishing is possible to only a limited extent for aniline leathers, the levelness of aniline dyeings has become even more important. The uniformity from skin to skin within a batch of leather to be dyed is of equal importance. Even if the same processing procedure and the same chemicals are used, differences in depth and levelness of shade may often occur from drum to drum. The question now arises as to which factors are responsible for these variations. In our investigations into this matter, we have concerned ourselves with the influence of the wetblues on aniline dyeings. We studied the influence of wetblues under varying conditions by changing the important parameters to such an extent as may occur in daily practice. The five parameters that were varied consisted of temperature an pH value of the chrome liquors as well as storage time, water content and shaved thickness of the wetblues.
