Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Two symmetrical derivatives of acrylamide, namely: N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide and N,N'-dimethylenebisacrylamide, were found to crosslink hide collagen and, with proper control of the reaction conditions, served as tanning agents. The reactions take place under alkaline conditions and swelling is controlled by addition of sodium sulfate. Shrinkage temperatures over 80°C were obtained and the products exhibited good resistance to chemical and enzymic attack. The products were made into white leather on a small scale. Two higher homologs, N,N'-trimethylenebisacrylamide and N,N'-hexamethylenebisacrylamide, could not be made to react under the same conditions nor under modified conditions designed to improve their solubility. The reflectance of dyed fur was measured by using a glass plate to prevent fur hairs entering an integrating sphere. The reproducibility in reflectance of dyed fur was good when a glass plate was employed and the sphere was not equipped with a light trap. The reflectance obtained by using a glass plate is considered to be different from the true reflectance, die to the influences of the reflection and transmission of light at the plate. An apparent reflectance (Rg) is defined to be the reflectance measured with a glass plate. The apparent and true (R) reflectances were correlated by the following equation. R = (Rg-K)/(T²+KRg-K²) Where K : Reflectance of glass T : Transmittance of glass 0< RK<1 K/S values were determined by use of the converted reflectances and the Kubelka-Munk equation. The K/S values were correlated with the dye concentrations. For light shades, the colors of dyed fur samples based on the calculated results were in good agreement with the color pattern to be matched. Thus, it is considered to be possible to apply the CCM technique to fur dyeing. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Potassium dimethyldithiocarbamate ( KDMDC) is a commercially available antimicrobial preservative registered by EPA for a variety of uses. This chemical has potential as an adjunct to brine curing for the preservation of cattlehides. KDMDC added to a brine raceway would permeate the hide during hide curing. This research was performed to determine whether or not this chemical could persist in the leather produced from brine-cured hides. It is theoritically possible that residual KDMDC in leather products could be extracted by perspiration creating a potential health hazard for the user. KDMDC was applied at normal and four-times-recommended application levels during brine curing of cattlehides. The cured hides were processed into crust leather that were then extracted with synthetic perspiration solution and the leachate analyzed for KDMDC by HPLC. Residual KDMDC was not found in any of the samples examined.
