Digestion anaérobieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Anaerobic digestion of animal glue industry solid wastes (AGISW) (residues from neutralised fleshings after glue extraction) was studied in a semi-continuous bench scale digester in order to determine the extent of the conversion into biogas. The Carbon/Nitrogen (C/N) ratio of AGISW is nearly 6.0. Solid wastes and wastewater from a local glue manufacturer were used as substrate for the anaerobic digestion. The study used a bench scale digester with a working volume of 6.5 litres operating at ambient temperature (28 ± 2°C). A hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 40 days and an Organic Loading Rate (OLR) of 3 ± 0.2 g /l. d were maintained during the study period. The study showed that 65 % of the volatile solids was destroyed. The average specific gas productions were 0.28 l /g of volatile solid added and 0.48 l/g of volatile solid removed. (Volatile solids are determined by ignition at 550°C and are a measure of the organic matter present in the waste - mainly denatured lipids and proteins).
The values of specific gas production and percentage Volatile Solids (VS) destruction are in agreement with those for industrial and agro industrial wastes reported in the literature. The results revealed an interesting fact that, anaerobic digestion of AGISW could be operated at high Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) concentration without affecting gas production.
Anaerobic digestion of AGISW was studied for the first time with a view to managing solid wastes in an ecofriendly manner. The authors are of the view that this maiden attempt would help the industry manufacturing animal glue to use biogas from its waste resource as fuel.Note de contenu : - Feed preparation

Hyaluronique, acideL'acide hyaluronique est un type de polysaccharide (plus précisément une glycosaminoglycane) non fixé à une protéine centrale et largement réparti parmi les tissus conjonctifs, épithéliaux et nerveux animaux.
Il se trouve notamment dans l'humeur vitrée et le liquide synovial. Il est l'un des principaux composants de la matrice extracellulaire ainsi que de certaines mucoprotéines lorsqu'il est associé à une fraction protéique.
Depuis les années 1990, il est très utilisé dans divers dispositifs médicaux, médicamenteux et cosmétiques (présenté dans ce dernier cas comme "antistatique, humectant, hydratant, conditionneur cutané, anti-âge, etc."), bénéficiant d'un effet de mode grandement soutenu par une large publicité commerciale.
Contribuant de façon significative à la prolifération et à la migration des cellules, l'acide hyaluronique est aussi impliqué dans la progression de certains cancers. (Wikipedia)

It is estimated that an increasingly large percentage of hides are now being disposed of as a waste in many countries around the world. How did the environmental sustainability community ever let this happen? In an attempt to stop meat-eating, the environmentally minded would rather destroy the planet than admit that wasting hides is inevitable if they cannot be beneficiated.
So, it's time to start again, meat eating is not being reduced as many had planned or hoped. The latest data shows that meat-eating increased during Covid lockdowns, hence the amount of hides generated would also have gone up. The environmentally-minded among us would like to see no by-products from the meat industry end up as waste. Why? Simply put, waste means that there are more environmental impacts or, with circularity in mind, using waste prevents the use of other materials. The indicators used for this environmental evaluation are: global warming potential (GWP) and energy return on investment (EROI). The contribution of each process-step in both GWP and EROI was determined. Transesterification of fat to obtain the BDF has been proved to be the most significant step in the process, mainly due to the consumption of methanol. A comparison between BDF and petroleum diesel obtained from non-renewable oil has also been performed using the same indicators. The results show a clear preference for BDF, although data from industrial real plants has to be considered in further works for BDF process to provide more accurate results. However, the excess chrome in tannery sludge limits its expanding use in agriculture. The absorption of chrome in different forms was studied in soil at different chrome concentrations and pHs. The research indicated that both Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were easily fixed by adsorption when they entered the soil. Adsorption of Cr(III) corresponded to Freundlich adsorption isothermal pattern, while that of Cr(VI) accorded with a Langmuir adsorption isothermal pattern. pH was the vital factor which effected the adsorption of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Most of the chrome in tannery sludge would settle in the soil when it was used as a fertilizer in agriculture, because the chrome is mainly Cr(III).
