It has been reported in literatures that zinc-rich paints protect the metal surface by galvanic and barrier action. A cathodic protection mechanism operates in the first stage, in which the zinc particles act anodically to protect the steel surface. The galvanic action of zinc-rich paints has been studied and reported by many authors. In the second stage a barrier effect operates to protect the steel, in which the pores are sealed by oxidation products of zinc. Note de contenu : - Electrode preparation

Information about substrate condition is often required in situations where components or structures are safety critical. This data can be used for life prediction of the component or the coating system providing the protection. by incorporating regular measurements into a monitoring schedule, coating/substrate data can become part of a condition monitoring system. This type of application is of particular value in situations where the area being monitored is physically inaccessible, such as the inside of tanks or pipes or where danger is present for human operators. Another important area for the use of monitoring is in the evaluation of new coating systems or where current systems are being altered in answer to environmental concerns over the presence of substances such as chromate and lead. Intumescence (chimie)
RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The need to provide fire protection has long been recognised as one of the main disadvantages wich faces steel in its battle against competitive materials in multistorey construction. This arises, not only, because of the cost of applying the protection itself, in the United Kingdom is currently thought to average 23% of the total cost of the steel frame, but also because of the effects of the application process on the construction programme. It buildings, to find that applying fire protection is one the critical path and so can significantly affect the overall construction time.
This paper looks at the requirements for a fire protection material from the viewpoint of the steelmaker, engineer and architect and also the question of off-site fire protection, an area in wich there is growing interest.Note de contenu : - CHOOSING A FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM : Appearance - Mechanical durability - Compatibility - Compatibility with the surroundings - Space requirements - Construction programme - Application or fixing rates - Cost
