ElectrophorèseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cultivation-based and DNA-based methods for determining the bacterial load and the composition of the bacterial spectrum have been successfully established for media in electrodip painting, and used for the detailed analysis of the contamination situation in an E-coating system of an automobile plant in Germany. Dominating representatives of the genus Microbacterium spp., the orders Burkholderiales and Pseudomonadales, the family Cytophagaceae and the genera Corynebacterium spp., Sphingomonas spp., and Stenotrophomonas spp. were used for inactivation experiments. Different pulsed electric field (PEF) parameters were studied for an effective and target-directed inactivation of defined bacterial suspensions containing mixtures of Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria, but also single species suspensions in adequate liquids. PEF treatment with pulse durations longer than 1.0 µs effectively killed bacteria even in low conductivity media, regardless of whether the pulses were unipolar or bipolar, indicating that the choice of pulse shape does not limit the design of the PEF system. Model calculations showed that for efficient treatment in bypass mode, a high treatment flow rate is required rather than a high inactivation efficiency of the PEF treatment. By using specific treatment parameters, such as bipolar pulses of 50 k Vcm−1 and a treatment energy of 40 J mL−1, a significant reduction in both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria (> 2 log10 reduction) can be achieved while minimizing electrode corrosion and coating degradation. PEF treatment proves to be an effective alternative to the use of biocides in an E-coating system and can help maintain a bacteriostatic environment in the system by operating at different points, in transfer flow or bypass mode, ensuring biocide-free operation. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 532.05 Mécanique des fluides et des liquides - Dynamique (cinétique et cinématique) Résumé : Viscosity measurements of a suspension of cornstarch in silicone oil, at several concentrations and subject to different electrical field strengths, were conducted. An increase in the apparent viscosity, in correlation with the field strength, which is characteristic of the so-called electrorheological fluids (ERF), was observed. For a given field intensity, the value of the viscosity increases rapidly in the first seconds after the application of the electric field, and then it increases slowly until it finally approaches a saturation value. This behaviour of the apparent viscosity has been related to the microstructure formation due to interactions between dipoles induced by the electric field. Characteristic times, related to structure formation after application of an electric field, are investigated by means of diffuse light transmission and speckle-pattern activity measurements. Two characteristic times were found that should be related to the state of aggregation of the suspended particles: orientation of the non-isotropic particles and later chain formation. These results agree reasonably with that obtained from electrorheological measurements. Microscopic observations of structure formation are also reported. ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : We report on the application of electric fields for the alignment and network formation of carbonaceous fillers in an epoxy resin thermoset during the curing. The structuring of the conductory distribution by means of inhomogeneous electric fields in a carbon black filled epoxy resin will be shown. The use of homogenous electric fields induces a preferential orientation and chain formation of fibrous filler particules. This will be demonstrated for dispersions of carbon nanofibres in epoxy resin in an alternating electric field. The resultant anisotropy of the electrical properties will be discussed. Surveillance électroniqueIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A model of electromagnetic behavior of composite materials such as carbon epoxy or glass epoxy structures has been developed. Based on this model, an electromagnetic method to evaluate the electric conductivity and the electric polarization of this type of material, by measurement of magnetic and electric components of an incident electromagnetic field crossing through the material, has been also developed. A Health Monitoring System (HMS) derived from this technique is presented, which allows to detect and characterize a wide variety of defects inside composite structures. The HMS is constituted of emitting and receiving networks sensitive to magnetic or electric fields, integrated into the composite structure. This system delivers electric images in which the damages can be detected and localized. Various electric images obtained by each type of measurement (magnetic and electric) and related to structures including various damages such as impact delamination, fiber breaking, local burning and liquid ingress, are presented and compared to images resulting from classical ultrasonic ND. The complementary of the present technique with acousto-ultrasonic technique based on Lamb waves propagation, and the interest of combining them in a unique integrated system is evoked. VerreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this investigation, the effect of deposition time (5, 60, or 300 s) on a double-sided antireflection (AR) coating done by layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolyte was determined. The different structures and transmittance of an AR coating induced by electric-field-assisted layer-by-layer deposition (ELBLD) (with voltage of 0.5, 5, 50, or 500 V) and normal deposition (with voltage of 0 V) were compared. The electric field was perpendicular to the glass surface. After 5.5 bilayers of PAH/PAA were fabricated, the film was exposed to an acidic treatment of HCl solution (pH 2.4) for 65 s, followed by a brief rinse (~15 s) in deionized water, blown dry with air, and heat treated at 220°C for 2 h. Regardless of whether the electric field was applied, the average transmittance of visible light of the AR coating was more than 96% except for the reduced transmittance because of the excessive deposition of polyelectrolyte at an applied voltage of 500 V and a deposition time of 300 s. Average transmittance of 97.68 ± 0.31% was obtained at normal deposition of 5.5 bilayers with deposition time of 60 s. The polyelectrolytes had a propensity to form larger particles or accumulate into bundles under ELBLD, which was detrimental to the transmittance of an AR coating. Therefore, at the same deposition time, transmittance values of ELBLD samples were slightly lower than those of normal deposition. In other words, in the overall performance, the AR films of normal deposition are superior to those of ELBLD. The blowing pressure applied to dry the coating had significant impact on the quality of the film. Note de contenu : - Transmittance values of visible light
