At one end, the vinyl and acrylic monomers prices in the international market are increasing, leading to new opportunities for further growth to SBR latex.
The paper will narrate the various developments in reference with the number of polymer emulsions, presently available, to the users, in different fields, and their cost and performance in the specific areas of surface coatings. Though prime importance has not been given to SBR latex, the actual users are finding it more convenient to use this versatile polymer latex.Note de contenu : - RANGE OF POLYMER EMULSIONS - Monomer properties of styrene and butadiene - Chemistry and product designing - polymer Bockbone Structure - Manufacturing process

A series of organotin acrylic copolymer of varying tin content, molecular waight, monomer combination and monomer ratio has been synthesised by copolymerising Tributyl tin methacrylate monomer (TBTM) with Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and MMA/Butyl acrylate (BA) combination. Organic peroxides and azo compounds of varying H-abstracting abilities and half life were employed as initiators. Azo bis isobutyro nitrile (AIBN) initiator has been found to be an effective initiator in synthesis of organotin copolymers with very low level of residual monomers. Polymerisation temperature above 140°C is having a detrimental effect on properties of organotin copolymers. IR spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, Gas liquid chromatography and viscosity measurements were used to evaluate the organotin acrylic polymers.
Self polishing co-polymer A/F Paints (SPCs) with varying tin content and volume solids were formulated using these synthesised organotin copolymers. Influence of different processing variables and binder composition on performance and effectiveness of SPC A/F paints have been evaluated by measuring the dry film thickness over a definite interval of time i.e. erosion rate & degree of fouling. It has been found that polishing rate of these SPC A/F paints depends on the ratio of methyl methacrylate & TBTM and on the nature of acrylate monomer used. Ratio of MMA/TBTM is inversely proportional to erosion rate of SPC's. BA/MMA/TBTM based organotin copolymer has faster rate of polishing than MMA/TBTM based copolymers.Note de contenu : - WORK DONE ON SELF POLISHING A/F PAINTS (SPCs) - Major advantages of Self Polishing Copolymer AF paints (SPCs)

S. rajagopalan, Auteur Année de publication : 1996 Article en page(s) : p. 35-40 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Corrosion is the destruction of metals by interaction with the environment. It is part of a natural cycle of events, in which metals tend to return to the state in which these are present in the earth. The implications of metallic corrosion are far-reaching:loss of metal thickness and mechanical properties, loss of production through corroded pipelines, contamination of product, undesirable blockages of valves and pipelines, reduction of heat transfer, shut-down of plants and, sometimes, loss of human lives. The cost to the national economy as a result of corrosion has been shown to be stupendous. It has been estimated that U.S.A., spends as much as 10 billion dollars annually on corrosion control, U.K., to the extent of £800 million and India Rs. 1500 million. While it is not possible to give a precise estimate of the cost of corrosion control in circulating water systems, it has been indicated that on corrosion inhibitors alone, USA, is spending 50 million dollars annually and the expenditure incurred in a single oil refinery can be as much as 100,000 dollars. Titre : Phenolic Resins Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Clive H. Hare, Auteur Année de publication : 1996 Article en page(s) : p. 41-46 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Apart from plasticized nitrocellulose (celluloid), the phenolic resins are the oldest of the syntetics, dating to the early decades of this century. Their chemistry is based on the condensation of phenol and modified phenols, such as para-phenyl phenol, para-tertiary butyl phenol, bisphenol A, and cresol (Table 1), with an aldheyde-virtually always formaldehyde.
As a class, the phenolics are characterized by excellent adhesion properties and resistance to moisture and oxygen. They have excellent heat and chemical resistance and good electrical properties. The phenolic hydroxyl is a point of some vulnerability in the resins because it leads to slight alkali sensitivity. This sensitivity can generally be offset by modification with other resin systems. More limiting is the dark colour of many phenolic compositions. (The phenolic resoles are almost always darker than the novolacs). The color and tendency of the film to darken furtherwhen exposed preclude many exterior applications (especially in light colors).
The fundamental synthesis reaction of phenolic resins may proceed in 1 of 2 ways, depending upon the ratios of the 2 primary reactants and pH.Note de contenu : - Phenolic Novolacs
