They are natural varieties of iron oxide pigments and are commercially known as oxides, ochres, siennas and umbers. They are obviously categorised on the basis of colour. Their colours vary from red, yellow, orange to brown and black. This is mainly due to the type and quality of iron oxide mineral that is present.
In general - the anhydrous form of ferric oxide, Haematite - Fe2O3 is responsible for the red colour, while the hydrate iron oxide, Limonite - 2Fe2O3.3H2O gives yellow colouration. Hydrated iron oxide in the presence of manganese oxide produces an orange shade an when having a higher manganese oxide content of over 10%, gives a rich brown colour. Magnetite - Fe3O4 is responsible for the black colour.
In addition to above, micaceous iron oxide may also be added. It is a crystalline, platelike, form of iron oxide with high haematite content. Instead of colour, it is characterised by its metallic sheen and flat lamellar nature. Thus, it differs from the more granular forms of the other natural oxides.Note de contenu : - Red iron oxide pigments

They used to be incorporated in the system to reduce the cost of the finished products. Now studies has shown that, the selection of proper extenders plays a very vitale role in the performance of the paint. Discussed below are the characteristic of the commonly used extenders.
