Titre : Biocidial challange : Why the growing trend towards water-based adhesives is creating a need for preservatives which will combat microbes causing product quality problems Type de document : texte imprimé Année de publication : 2004 Article en page(s) : p. 7-8 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Adhesives have a high degree of human exposure both at the industrial and consumer level. During the production of corrugated boxes the operator will be exposed to solvents volatilising as will the connsumer applying a construction adhesive such as wood glue for DIY purposes at home. So lowering the VOC is a major aim for adhesive producers and where possible the solvent containing formulations are being replaced by water based ingredients.
A major raw material ingredient in an adhesive formulation is the polymer dispersion. The most common types of polymer dispersion are based on either styrene butadiene (SBR) or acrylic chemistry and supplied as an aqueous system. In addition, the suppliers of polymer dispersions have continued to lower the VOC by reducing the levels of free monomer in their products because monomers are also volatile and harrmful to humans as well as the environment. Consequently, the VOC reduction in polymer dispersions has removed those ingredients previously responsible for microbiological protection of the raw material and today yielding products susceptible to microbes, which can proliferate in the final water-based adhesive.Note de contenu : - The need for a preservative

Titre : Creative assembly : Some of the innovative, possibly revolutionary, achievementss in the electronics' adhesives sector Type de document : texte imprimé Année de publication : 2004 Article en page(s) : p. 10-11 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : If the image of Charlie Chaplin in 'Modern Times' bolting together a huge wheel sums up an era dominated by screws, rivets and welding, the century that is now beginning is best encapsulated by the stylish, creative assemblies made possible through bonding.
From helicopter blades to the bodywork of modern trains, from miniaturised mobile phones to the immense spans of composite arches, adhesives and adhesive tapes are being used for an ever greater range of applications, while providing ever more enhanced preformance.
For it is thanks to these new components, resins and tapes that aircraft wings possess such incredible strenght, that engines no longer lose oil, and that drones and launch vehicles for space applications have such lightweight structures.
In fact, rather than simply changing assembly techniques, these new materials have altered our entire technological approach.
We are seeing shapes and objects that were previously impossible. Models and prototypes that could not be built because of the limitations of mechanical assembly are now commonplace.
Where once it was a question of thinking about weight and the rigidity of shapes imposed by the methods of mechanical assembly, now it's a matter of lightness and of lines determined solely by aesthetic considerations. Once complex and costly processes have given way to lighter loads and simpler procedures, very often bringing major competitive advantage.Note de contenu : - Transformation ...
