Waterborne polyurethane dispersions' inherent polymer chain, particle and film morphology allow development of coherent coatings with excellent mechanical properties, which are suited for various applications.
DSM announced recently that it has decided to build a new factory for polyurethane dispersions in Meppen in Germany, which will come on stream mid 2007.
This article will highlight the oppportunities available to purpose design polyurethane dispersions in terms of polymer backbone and fim forming characteristics suitable for high perfomance applications.Note de contenu : - Waterborne polymers in surface coatings

The demand for sustainable paints and varnishes is steadily rising and consmumers are increasingly asking for coatings that combine ecological soundness with outstanding technical performance. If coatings products are to have wide appeal in the DIY and professional decorator markets, it is essential that they be easy to use, environmentally sound and provide outstanding overall performance.
Consumers demand water-based coatings that give the same surface quality as solvent-based products. They also expect easy application and spatter resistance when using rollers - and all without the product containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or posing health risks or danger to the environment. Formulators are eager to serve that demand and, naturally, have to make sure their manufacturing processes are cost-effective. The publication in January 2006 of the 2nd Amendment of the Dangerous Preparations Directive establishes more stringent labelling requirements of preparations (ie paints and coatings) containing chemical substances classified as being toxic for the environment. European Member States are required to make this Directive effective in their National laws by March 1, 2007.
The consequence is that many paints containing specific algicides will have to carry the environmental N-symbol and corresponding Risk phrases. There are, however, alternative biocides, which will not trigger the environmental label and provide excellent fungicidal and algicidal efficacy.Note de contenu : - Environmental classification and labelling
