Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The stability of aqueous dispersions of a rutile titanium dioxide pigment (TiO2) under ultrasonic treatment in the presence of such water-soluble polymers as poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), poly(vinyl alcohol), ethylhydroxy ethylcellulose was studied. Without polymers, the ultrasonic treatment of a dilute TiO2 aqueous dispersion results in a rapid complete reflocculation of the dispersion. In the presence of a given polymer, a stabilizing effect was observed, which depends on the nature of a polymer, its concentration and the duration of the ultrasonic treatment. It resulted in a reduction of a particle size and a more narrow particle size distribution. The TiO2 particles with preliminary surface treatment by oxides of Al, Si and Zr show higher dispersion stability in comparison with non-treated particles. Note de contenu : - The experiment
- Ultrasonic treatment causes the formation of fresh surfaces
- Different degree of degradation of the polymers causes different behaviour in the ultrasonic field
- Polymer adsorption on the pigment surface and creation of a stabilizing layer
- Inorganic treatment of the pigment surface is conductive to particle stabilization with polymersPermalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=11061

Titre : Self-stratifying coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Vladimir V. Verkholantsev, Auteur Année de publication : 2000 Article en page(s) : p. 24-33 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Revêtements autostratifiants:Peinture autostratifiante Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The objective of the project, which was funded by the European Commission and Europwan coatings and resins manufacturers, was the formulation of liquid self-stratifying coatings which after application as thin films spontaneously form two coherent layers, thus providing an undercoat and finishing coat in one operation. As a first step a database was compiled of the relevant physical properties of polymers used in surface coatings. This necessitated extensive new measurements of solubility, surface energies, phase equilibria and other parameters. A theory of stratification was developed for films comprising binary mixtures of polymers in solution and tested for a wide range of polymer mixtures. Group-contribution (UNIFAC) theory was employed to predict phase-separation and surface properties. A preliminary study was also made of the principles of formulating waterborne stratifying coatings from aqueous polymer dispersions. Solution coatings were successfully formulated for steel, plastic and wood substrates. Their performance was then evaluated under industrial spray application conditions. The mechanism of formation of stratified films in the experimental compositions could be described in terms of the solubility relationships of the polymer mixtures, the surface tensions of the separate phases and the kinetic aspects of solvent evaporation from paint films. Principal component and discriminant analysis of the experimental data generated quantitative equations for calculating the probability of stratification from the physical properties of polymers. For medium to high solids application, the coatings were liquid in liquid emulsions rather than homogeneous solutions. The problem of reproducibly locating pigments in the two layers was not fully resolved and would require further study to achieve commercially viable coatings. A fuller description of the research including experimental details is to be found in the accompanying papers from the participating research institutes. Titre : MFFT of copolymer dispersions Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Manfred Schwartz, Auteur ; Cheng-Le Zhao, Auteur Année de publication : 2000 Article en page(s) : p. 34-41 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Emulsion based paints can be formulated with a variety of chemically different polymer dispersions. These binders are mainly based on acrylic or vinyl ester copolymers. The present publication treats comparative experiments of acrylic copolymers having different minimum film forming temperatures (MFFT). For masonry, as in many applications, the principle question is, which is the right performance profile for a copolymer dispersion based on acrylic and styrene monomers to achieve a long lasting paint? Further, the market is looking for binders which permit the formulation of solvent-free architectural coatings. This requirement can be achieved by using a binder having suitable MFFT. The MFFT of such a binder should be below 5°C. We want to discuss similarities and differences between acrylic/styrene emulsions having different MFFTs. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The well established 2K-PUR coatings for plastic substrates are challenged by the need of the industry to reduce costs and production time as well as emissions and fogging, but at the same time increase the coatings quality (e.g. scratch or chemical resistance) and improve the processibility. Starting with the well established solvent based 2K-PUR-systems, the possibilities to adjust the coating system - with regard to elasticity, scratch resistance, chemical resistance - will be shown. For the need to reduce emissions during application one can Increase the solid content to e.g. 60% or higher. In addition to 2K-PUR the possibility of 1K-PUR (at baking temperatures of less than 100 °C) will be shown. If this is not sufficient enough for reducing VOC, then waterborne 2K-PUR is the system of choice. Here, the same possibilities for adjusting the properties of the coating system to the need of the plastic substrate exist. Note de contenu : - Soft touch is due to the elasticity of the components
