In the laboratory scale experiments conducted, the activity and the performance of the enzyme satisfied the conditions necessary for its application in unhairing. The comparison of the microscopical structures of the enzyme treated and lime-sulphide treated pelts have been studied and these results along with the physical testing data for the strength properties of the leather are presented in this paper. These results indicate that the enzyme has good potential to be exploited as an environmentally friendly option in unhairing as the bend is more towards cleaner technologies presently. Titre : Hydrolysis of tannery fleshings using pancreatic enzymes : a biotechnological tool for solid waste management Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : S. Kumaraguru, Auteur ; C. Rose, Auteur ; T. P. Sastry, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 32-40 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Fleshings, the major solid waste generated at the pretanning operations of leather processing, were hydrolysed using pancreatic enzymes with a view to evolve a simple method for solid waste management. The proteolytic activity of pancreatic homogenate with casein was found to be 80 units/ml. Fleshings, treated with pancreatic enzyme preparation showed a six fold increase in proteolysis against the control at the end of 7 days. The total protein content, collagen and the free fatty acids in the hydrolysate supernatant were 80.0, 10.64 and 72.86 mg/ml respectively. The optimum pH for the enzyme preparation was 8.5. The hydrolysis was observed by almost total liquifaction of the fleshing.
