Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The chemical treatment leather with fatliquor and physical treatment of staking produce similar esthetic results. The effects of two such different treatments on the structure of the leather, however, and perhaps various other responses to deformation, are expected to be different. The equivalence of fatliquoring and staking were investigated by comparing the effects of the treatments on the stress-strain curves and the acoustic emission observed during tensile testing. It was found that staking affects only the first 25% of the elongation at break, lowering the initial modulus, while fatliquors affect the whole stress-strain curve. The initial part becomes concave upward instead of downward, and the elongation and stress at failure are greater. Acoustic emission from leather that was merely staked was suppressed only at small elongations, while it was smaller at all elongations from leather that had fatliquor. The results are shown to be consistent with a domain model of deformation. A nondestructive determination of the elongation of leather at tensile failure, based on acoustic emission, is derived from the observations. Tannage Résumé : The Michael Reaction has been used with an acrylic-acid derivative to provide additional carboxyl binding sites on collagen during processing of hides into leather. The crosslinked product had a higher shrinkage temperature and a considerably lower lysine and hydroxylysine content than conventionally processed hides. Subsequent tanning led to a higher chrome uptake than that found in the untreated control. The results indicated that both direct crosslinking and improved chrome tanning are possible with this derivative but that these are accompanied by some loss of tensile strength En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B2RiLHhKURvVOJE4M_0wUHDk_BoPn5zo/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8493

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Differential scanning calorimetry shows two temperature regions of collagen denaturation in corium major of butt hide from mature cattle, a narrow region centered at 68°C and a wide region ar 85°C. Both temperatures are sensitive to beaming and tanning processes, but the enthalpiy of denaturation remains constant at 13 cal/g in all but tanned samples. It is concluded that there are two populations of collagen in the hide in commensurate amounts; only the heat sensitivity of the less stable population is indicated by the shrinkage temperature as usually measured. Titre : Fiber adhesion in solvent-dried calfskin studied by acoustic emission spectroscopy Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Paul L. Kronick, Auteur ; Philip Thayer, Auteur Année de publication : 1989 Article en page(s) : p. 257-265 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The adhesions among the fibers od dried calfskin were examined by measuring the acoustical pulses emitted when the skin was stretched. The rate of emission of the pulses and their energies were determined. The frequency distributions of the pulse amplitudes comprised spectra that were similar in shape for skin that had been dried from acetone, petroleum ether, and petroleum ether containing fatliquor. The separate contributions from the ruptures of adhesions and of fibers to these spectra were analyzed and related to the lubrification of the fibers by fatliquor. The method promises to be helpful in elucidating and following changes in fiber adhesion in tanning, drying, impregnation, filling, and finishing, and might serve as the basis of a field test in leather drying. Titre : Fiber orientation and small-deformation modulus of stretched, partially-dried hide Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Paul L. Kronick, Auteur ; Peter R. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The dynamic, low-deformation, tensile modulus of raw bovine corium was measured in various states of static elongation and dehydration from neutral and low pH. The data were analyzed by comparing the overall change in fiber orientation during stretching, as determined by small angle light scattering, with yhe number of fibers that are pulled straight while subject to interfiber adhesions. The wet rawhide at pH=7, which contained 164 percent water based on dry weight, elongated with little overall fiber orientation, but its modulus increased by two orders of magnitude when stretched by 20 percent, showing the effects of progressive growth in the number of straightened fibers. The modulus at 20 percent elongation increased only 2 fold in the presence of 60 percent (v/v) isopropanol, showing a greater effect of interfiber adhesion, which hindered the movement and straightening of fibers. Within experimental error the maximum values of the moduli of samples in 0%, 60%, and 100% isopropanol, at 20 percent elongation, were the same, showing the equivalence of fiber adhesion. The hide shrank more when solvent-dried from an acid-swollen state (pH=3), but the interfiber adhesion wazs lowered, as seen in the behavior of the fibers when the dried material was stretched. These results explain the properties of solvent-dried hides in terms of the movements of the hide fibers when the dried hide is deformed, and have implications for process design and product quality.
