This chemical is used in the unhairing process to loosen the hair and chemically dissolve it. Enzymes have been shown to be an alternative to using lime sulfide in the unhairing process. A cost comparison of chemical and enzyme unhairing processes was conducted. It was found that chemical unhairing is currently more cost effective than the enzyme process. However, as the environmental damage caused by chemical unhairing becomes better understood, it is assumed that more stringent regulations will be placed on tanneries, increasing their costs. From this study it is reported that enzymatic unhairing should eventually be adopted as society better realizes the damage caused to the environment from using chemical unhairing.
