The use of antimicrobial products (bactericides and fungicides) in the tannery is not new. However the legislation regarding which actives are permitted by Federal and State regulatory agencies and for what application and level are constantly changing. Tanners and suppliers alike must be cognizant of these changes.The following overview is meant to serve as strictly an educational overview of what the current restrictions, demands and penalties are regarding the discovery, commercialization, and application of pesticides in the manufacture of leather. A complete review of FIFRA will be provided.This paper outlines the path of a pesticide active or formulation through inception to obtaining the proper U.S. EPA and State registration(s). Toxicology, exposure, environmental fate (worker health and safety) study demands will be discussed. The introduction of any new raw material to the leather industry is not an easy task. Introducing new microbiocides, however, poses an even greater challenge due to the special regulations and substantial costs associated with their development. This article will highlight the process that Buckman Laboratories goes through when bringing a new microbiocide to the leather marketplace. |
