Résumé : |
The current standard for determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint and coating systems in the United States is EPA Method 24 (ASTM D 3960-02). It has been reported that VOC measurements carried out using this method have errors which increase nearly exponentially at VOC levels less than 250 g/L.1 Due to the uncertainties inherent in this test method, certain classes of coatings additives have traditionally been evaluated as neat products rather than in fully formulated paints. This article outlines experimentation that was carried out to quantify the actual VOC levels of two representative coalescing aids in formulated paints using both EPA Method 24 and a proposed alternative test method that utilizes an automated thermal desorber (ATD) with flame ionization detection (FID). Results indicate that in formulated paints, the measured VOCs of coatings additives are in some cases less than the VOCs observed when these additives are tested as neat materials. |
