The author's intention is, rather, to focus attention on certain selected areas of activity and concerns within that marketplace, in the hope that a snapshot in time of the coil coating activity in North America will emerge with sufficient color and clarity that the reader will have a good qualitative feel for where things are as of 1998. The author apologizes in advance to any readers who search in vain for commentary on a particular area of interest that is not touched upon here. Scratch and mar resistance is related to the ability of a coating in resisting deformation. The appearance change may be due to unsightly scratches or to surface roughening which causes a reduction in gloss and reflectivity. Against this background, methods including Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterise clearcoats. The determination of the position and width of the glass transition point, enthalpy relaxation and crosslinking density provides an important insight into the varying behaviour of clearcoats when scratched. Measuring the time-dependent enthalpy relaxation has proved to be a useful method for predicting the reflow behaviour of coatings. Four different paints have been tested, representing the most commercially significant antifouling coating technologies currently in use. No significant differences observed in the leach rate data could be attributed to the analytical methods used (FAA, GFAA, ICP) or due to paint application. inter-laboratory differences in copper leach rate were particularly obvious for non organotin paints. Organotin copolymer based paints showed a lower degree of variation. As a result, an organotin based paint has been chosen as the appropriate reference paint for the ISO test procedure.
