The effect of different parameters regarding the processing and treatment on the discoloration of knots (so called knot yellowing) on painted joinery of Scots pine was evaluated in an extensive study. The parameters studied included the kiln-drying temperature, the distance of the knot from the original kiln-dried surface, type of preservative treatment and the type of coating system. Wood samples representing 92 different test classes were exposed outdoors for five months. Knot yellowing was measured with a colour difference meter. Statistical evaluation of the results was performed by multivariate data analysis. Knot yellowing was affected by several of the studied factors, although the largest effect was provided by preservative treatment with solvent-borne products. |
