Allylic alcohols improve acrylic polyols / Daniel B. Pourreau in EUROPEAN COATINGS JOURNAL (ECJ), N° 11/2004 (11/2004)

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Low VOC components - Efforts to reduce the VOC content of two-component urethane coatings have focused primarely on lowering the molecular weight of the polyols. Unfortunatly, the OH fonctionnality of conventionnal polyols decreased linearly with molecular weight. With that, the crosslinkingability of the polyol and the performance of the coating also decrease. This inherant limitation has been overcome by developing a new class of acrylic polyols based on allylic alcohols. Acrylic two-component (2K) urethane technology has undergone a gradual evolution over the past twenty years. Incremental changes in acrylic polyols and isocyanate crosslinkers have been, for the most part, driven by lower VOC content limits and increased performance requirements.
However, the basic chemistry of acrylic polyols has not substantially changed over that time period. Almost every acrylic polyol on the market today is obtained by free-radical polymerisation of acrylate and methacrylate esters and styrene. Hydroxyl functionality is introduced by adding hydro-functional acrylates (HFAs) to the monomer blend.Note de contenu : - Lower VOCs hits performance

Substitution effects on dye hydrolysis and intermolecular interactions were investigated with density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-311G level. The results showed that the phthalimide moieties adopted a coplanar conformation in respect of the azo-coupled phenyl rings in all six dyes. N-Alkyl substitution had little influence on the absorption maxima. Bromo and cyano substitution on the phthalimide ring resulted in hypsochromic and bathochromic shifts of the absorption maxima respectively. Hydrolysis of the phthalimide ring was found to be largely influenced by steric effects rather than inductive effects of substituents. It was also found that π-stacking interactions of phthalimide/phenyl and phthalimide/phthalimide dimers were promoted by substituents. The results indicated that interactions are dominated by electrostatic and even more importantly dispersion forces. The computational results were also confirmed experimentally. ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The electrochemical characteristics in the degradation process of epoxy zinc-rich coating (80 wt% zinc particles) and epoxy varnish coating in 3.5% NaCl solution were studied comparatively by using open-circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. The coating morphology, the consumption and corrosion products of zinc particles and chemical changes in the coatings were observed and analyzed with the methods of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the zinc-rich coating provides effective cathodic protection to the carbon steel substrate at the initial stage and still provides certain cathodic protection in the period when the barrier protection by the formation of zinc corrosion products begins to dominate. Because the zinc particles are conductive and active, the values of the coating resistance and capacitance of zinc-rich coatings are lower than those of the varnish coating. When the value of |Z|0.01Hz decreases to 8 × 104 Ω cm2, the zinc-rich coatings still provide protection to the steel substrate, but when the value decreases to about 2 × 104 Ω cm2, rusted spots were observed on the coating surface. Based on the results, a reference criterion of failure for the zinc-rich epoxy coatings is suggested to be about 5 × 104 Ω cm2 (2 × 104 – 8 × 104 Ω cm2), which is different from the one (106 Ω cm2) reported in the literature for typical organic coatings without conductive particles. Séparation huile/eauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this work, a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic brass mesh had been prepared. The prepared sample displayed a water contact angle (WCA) of 160o and was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), white light interferometer (WLI), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Besides, a high-speed camera was used to study the impact process of a droplet on the surface of the prepared sample. The superhydrophobic brass mesh exhibited excellent self-cleaning ability, environmental adaptability, corrosion resistance (η = 98.9%), and delayed icing ability (~ 45 min). Furthermore, the superhydrophobic mesh could be used as a filter to fast and efficiently separate various kinds of oils (light and heavy oils) and oil pollutants in daily life and industry. The superhydrophobic filter could be reused 50 times for oil-water separation without any apparent decrease in its separation capability. Thus, the superhydrophobic brass mesh prepared by a simple method holds promise for various applications in the industrial field of oil-water separation.
