It aims at exposing the formulation requirements of certain acrylic resin binder suitable for leather finishing applications. The materials are presented in a manner to benefit both the students studying leather science and technology or leather engineering in tertiary institutions as well as those in the leather industry whose knowledge in this technology is deficient. Students of polymer science and technology will also appreciate the contents of this book as it tries to study the effect acrylic polymer resin in the performance of finished leathers. This book will assist mostly undergraduates in understanding the processes of leather making, formulation of finishing agents, properties and behavior of finished leather. It will also benefit those with little or no technical background in leather processes as well as those who have sophisticated background in science but no experience in the leather industry. Tests de sécuritéIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : The growing consumers’ preferences and concerns regarding healthy ageing, youthful skin appearance, environmental protection and sustainability have triggered an ever-increasing trend towards natural, eco-friendly and ethically sourced anti-ageing products. Accordingly, this paper describes design and evaluation of novel, safe, effective and high-quality emulsion serums, completely based on ingredients of natural origin, intended for improving facial fine lines and wrinkles.
- Methods : Model formulations, stabilized by an innovative glycolipid mixed emulsifier (lauryl glucoside/myristyl glucoside/polyglyceryl-6 laurate) and containing Acmella oleracea extract as a model anti-ageing active, were prepared by cold process and fully assessed regarding their rheological behaviour (continuous rotational and oscillatory tests) and physical stability (dynamic-mechanical thermoanalysis – DMTA test). To study and optimize the simultaneous influence of varied formulation factors (emollients and emulsifier concentrations) on critical rheological attributes of the developed serums, a central composite design within ‘design of experiments’ approach was employed. The general skin performance – preliminary safety and anti-wrinkle efficacy of selected model serum, was evaluated in human volunteers, by employing several objective, non-invasive bioengineering techniques.
- Results : Rheological characterization revealed favourable shear-thinning flow behaviour with yield point, and dominating elastic character (storage modulus G’ > loss modulus G") in both amplitude and frequency sweeps, which together with relatively small structural change obtained in DMTA test indicated overall satisfying rheological and stability properties of formulated serums. From the established design space, and taking into account formulation cost and carbon footprint, promising model serum (desired/optimal apparent viscosity, yield point and loss factor, rather small and constant structural change), containing 15% of emollients and 1% of emulsifier, was chosen for in vivo evaluations. Screening of skin irritation effects revealed the absence of potential irritancy of investigated serum, suggesting overall satisfying skin tolerability/preliminary safety. Silicone skin replica image analysis demonstrated noticeable reduction/improvement in all measured skin wrinkle parameters after only 2 weeks of test serum application in periorbital and perioral areas, indicating its rapid and beneficial effects on the facial expression lines and wrinkles.
- Conclusion : Altogether, the results corroborate the promising potential of the developed Acmella oleracea extract-loaded emulsion serum as safe, effective and non-invasive natural anti-wrinkle product.Note de contenu : MATERIAL AND METHODS : Materials - Preparation of natural anti-wrinkle serums - DoE –Central composite design - Rheological characterization - Stability study - In vivo skin performance/efficacy study - Statistical analysis

Usure (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The present work describes the processing and studies the erosion wear characteristics of bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composites filled with SiC particulate. The mechanical properties of these composites are evaluated and are then compared with those of a similar set of SiC filled glass-epoxy composites. The solid particle erosion characteristics of the bamboo-epoxy composites have also been studied and the experimental results are compared with the reported erosion test results on glass-epoxy composites under similar test conditions by Biswas and Satapathy (2009). The influence of particulate filler on the erosion wear response of composites has been critically analyzed using Taguchi experimental design. This systematic experimentation has led to determination of significant process parameters and material variables that predominantly influence the wear rate of the particulate filled glass-epoxy and bamboo-epoxy composites. The comparative study indicates that although the bamboo based composites exhibit relatively inferior mechanical properties, their erosion wear performance is better than that of the glass-epoxy composites. Teinture -- Fibres textiles synthétiquesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The dyeing of non-wovens in fabric form is of interest for a range of applications especially aesthetics. In this work, needle-punched non-woven fabrics were prepared by employing polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) fibres of two different linear density and same mean fibre length in four different fibre linear density ratios and three different fabric mass areal densities, while keeping all other process and material variables constant. The objectives of the study were to find out the saturation point in the dyeing profile of needle-punched non-wovens by varying aforementioned process variables and, for the first time, compare different industrially relevant conventional fabric dyeing methods (Jet, Package and Jigger dyeing) in terms of physical, mechanical and colour fastness properties. In case of Jet and Package dyeing, non-woven fabric was successfully dyed without any structural reorientation while fabric sample deformation is reported in Jigger dyeing process. Furthermore, tensile strength (in newtons) of samples was increased, while air permeability (in mm/s) was decreased due to the slight compactness of structure after the dyeing process. Note de contenu : 1. THEORIE SUR LES PLANS POLYFACTORIELS
