Titre : Silane curing agents in waterborne coatings : Study of advances in silane technology for emulsion polymers Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ming Jang Chen, Auteur ; Philibert E. Ramdatt, Auteur ; Weizhen Cai, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 532-537 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Alkoxysilanes have been commonly employed as crosslinkers and coupling agents for decades. The instability of silanes in waterborne systems has been a barrier to their effective use in such systems. In this article, advances in silane technology for emulsion polymers are described. The goal is to develop formaldehyde-free, self-crosslinking moisture cure latexes and urethane dispersions. Studies of the factors controlling the shelf stability, cure response and the coating performance are discussed. Note de contenu : - Hindered silane monomers

Titre : Flop and rheological parameters in waterborne basecoats : Correlation between the rheological parameters and the observable flop of mica pigments Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Michael Osterhold, Auteur ; Georg Tönnissen, Auteur ; Klaus Wandelmaier, Auteur ; Thomas Brock, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 538-541 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This article is concerned with rheological analyses of special effect development (flop) in aqueous pearlescent/coloured pigment systems. In order to assess the effect quantitatively, a so-called flop index was calculated by measuring the brightness values L* of painted panels as a function of the gloss angle difference. In order to reveal correlations between measurable physical parameters and the observed effect, the rheologically measured values for storage modulus G', phase shift δ, yield point and viscosity were compared with the values of the flop index. The results show good correlations between the observable effect and the rheological parameters of the liquid paint. Titre : Silicones : super stabilizers for supercritical coating systems ? Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : John N. Hay, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 542-545 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a carrier for coating systems is particularly attractive because of its potential for use in truly environmentally benign coating systems. In this paper, recent advances in the use of silicone (siloxane) stabilizers will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on progress in the development of stabilizers for dispersion polymerization, while drawing attention to the relevance of this technology to scCO2 coating systems. The versatility offered by siloxane chemistry should enable suitable stabilizers to be designed to offer the balance of properties required for the development of effective supercritical dispersion coating systems. Titre : Computerized colour matching : A mainstay for the coatings industry of today Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Steven J. Morosky, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 546-548 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : While an eye for colour matching is still important, it is no longer the most efficient method to match the ever growing gamut of colours and meet the tight specifications confronting the coatings industry of the late 90's and beyond. Today, what used to be an art has evolved into a very precise and repeatable technological process. Relatively inexpensive, super-fast processors and potent colour computer matching systems that are user-friendly and understandable have elevated computerized colour matching to new heights in speed, accuracy and performance. In fact, this technology has become a necessity for maintaining economic competitiveness in today's aggressive global marketplace. Note de contenu : - Economic benefits

Titre : Dynamics of surfactant enhanced spreading Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Randal M. Hill, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 550-553 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Aqueous dispersions of trisiloxane polyoxyethylene surfactants spread rapidly over hydrophobic surfaces making them useful in waterbased coatings for plastics. Several features of this spreading challenge existing models. Initial inertial spreading is followed by a period in which the area increases linearly with time. Vesicle forming surfactants appear to spread faster than comparable micelle forming examples suggesting that surfactant transport is rate controlling. The author and his collaborators have recently demonstrated that these characteristics are also exhibited by certain nonionic and ionic hydrocarbon surfactants although the trisiloxanes remain unique in their ability to promote spreading on the most hydrophobic surfaces.
