Under intense illumination, the crosslinking polymerization was found to occur in the dried film within less than one second to generate a totally insoluble polymer. The influence of a number of critical factors on the polymerization rate and cure extent has been investigated, namely the type of photoinitiator, the chemical structure of the acrylate functionalized oligomer, and the sample temperature. Coatings obtained from emulsions undergo a faster and more extensive polymerization than coatings obtained from dispersions, because of a greater molecular mobility in the soft low-modulus polymer formed. Very hard coatings were produced by the UV curing of dispersion-type acrylate resins, especially when the UV irradiation was performed at 80°C on the sample emerging from the drying oven. Tg values up to 120°C were reached when such resins were UV-cured at ambient temperature as 1-mm thick plates, because of the large amount of heat released during such ultrafast polymerization. UV-cured coatings made of aliphatic polyurethane-acrylates proved to be very resistant to accelerated weathering in the presence of adequate light stabilizers. Viscoelastic behavior was measured using instrumented indentation. A model based on the contact between a rigid probe and a viscoelastic material was used to calculate values for the creep compliance and stress relaxation modulus for two polymeric materials, epoxy and poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA. Scratch testing was performed on these materials with various probes under a variety of conditions, and confocal microscopy was used to characterize the resulting deformation. Relationships among viscoelastic behavior, scratch damage, and appearance are currently being explored using these methods along with finite element modeling. With the noninvasive feature of LSCM, one can obtain thickness information directly and nondestructively at various exposure times without destroying the specimens or deriving the thickness values from IR measurement by assuming uniform film ablation. Two acrylic polymer coatings were chosen for the study, and the physical and chemical changes of the two systems at various exposure times were measured and analyzed. Those measurable physical changes caused by UV exposure include film ablation, formation of pits and other surface defects, and increases in surface roughness. It was found in both coatings that changes in measured film thickness by LSCM were not correlated linearly to the predicted thickness loss using the changes in the CH band obtained by the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements in the later degradation stages. This result suggested it was not a uniform film ablation process during the UV degradation. At later stages, where surface deformation became severe, surface roughness and profile information using LSCM were also proven to be useful for analyzing the surface degradation process. Results showed that coatings formed spontaneously on galvanized surfaces upon exposure to ambient temperature alkaline aluminate solutions. Anodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments showed clear evidence of surface passivation. Scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of continuous and conformal surface film comprised on a compact mass of crystallites. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the coating contained an Al-Zn hydrotalcite compound. Coating formation was enhanced by oxidizer and ammonium salt additions. Coatings formed by using best practices were deposited in less than 10 minutes and demonstrated good surface coverage and good organic coating adhesion. HT coatings formed by using best practices showed excellent organic coating adhesion compared to zinc phosphate control coatings. In salt spray testing, the presence of a hydrotalcite conversion coating under an epoxy neat resin was found to delay the onset of red rusting compared to control samples that were epoxy coated, but not conversion coated. Mica, kaolin, and synthetic calcium silicate were used as extenders. Several series of coatings were designed and manufactured employing the following binders: 20 cP chlorinated rubber, a vinyl copolymer, an unsaturated polymer, or an epoxy resin. A simultaneous analysis of the experimental data was performed taking into account that the best performance is attained at pigment volume concentration (PVC) values equal to or slightly lower than the critical one (CPVC). Results indicate that for every lamellar zinc primer, it is possible to select an extender of high oil absorption as the spacer of the zinc particles attaining both very good blistering resistance and anticorrosive performance. The powder films were prepared from fluorescein (F)-labeled PS particles at room temperature. The mechanically strong films were obtained by annealing these films at elevated temperatures in 5, 10, 20, and 30 min time intervals above the glass transition (Tg) temperature of polystyrene. Scattered light (Is) and fluorescence (IF) intensities from F were monitored after each annealing step to investigate the three different film formation stages called void closure, healing, and interdiffusion. The evolution of transparency of the latex films was monitored by using a photon transmission technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to detect the variation in physical structure of the annealed latex films. Onset temperature for void closure, Tm, and healing temperatures, Th, were determined and corresponding activation energies were measured. Void closure and interdiffusion stages were also modeled and the related activation energies were also determined. It was observed that lower energy is needed for the void closure process than interdiffusion of chains across the particle-particle boundaries. Aqueous dispersions consisting of an experimentally determined ratio of epoxy resin and nitrile latex were evaporated at 35°C. When the dispersion was evaporated under controlled conditions without forced air flow, a flexible and adherent polymer material formed. The mechanism for coalescence was related to the loss in weight of dispersing liquid during an initial zero order kinetics stage. This was followed by a rate-controlled Fick's law diffusion through the developing coating with subsequent evaporation to the atmosphere. Experimental measurements are compared with theoretical predictions. The rate constant for the zero order time frame is 0.086 ± 0.02 h-1. In the second time frame, Ficks's law evaporation rate constant is 0.046 ± 0.017 cm.h-1 with a diffusion coefficient of 0.00092 ± 0.00051 cm2.hr-1 at 35 ± 1 °C and RH 35 ± 7%. Applications for evaporation kinetics are discussed. The effect of the dispersed phase volume fraction (phi) on the DSD of aqueous PU dispersions is also examined to understand the fundamental characteristics that result from the high shear mixing. DSD is measured by using either a high magnification video probe or dynamic light scattering, depending on the range of drop sizes. For the PU without any ionic content, the distributions appear to be bimodal with rather large drop sizes. The mean sizes of the first and second modes are about 10 and 22 µm, respectively. For the PU with an ionic content, the mean drop sizes are approximately 80 nm. The distributions reveal that functional chemistry plays a more dominant role in the process of making PU dispersions than the mechanical agitation, and that phi has a weak effect on the mean drop sizes. The results further suggest that mechanical agitation can be used to control the breadth of the distributions.
