Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Conventional solvent-based oil-modified urethanes (OMU) have been a mainstay in wood flooring and clear varnish applications for many years. Since their introduction into the United States in the early 1950s, their usage has grown steadily. They find application in the toughest environments, like gymnasium and athletic floors, as well as clear varnishes for hardwood floors in homes, offices, and other public buildings. While favored by the professional flooring contractor, they also are used by the do-it-yourself (DIY) homeowner, for everything from floors to cabinet refinishing to wood furniture restoration.
The features that have made this technology so popular over the years include ease of application, fast dry, excellent long-term durability, and reasonable cost. There are very few resin and varnish systems that can provide the ease of use, appearance, dry time, early mar and scuff resistance, abrasion resistance, and household stain and chemical resistance of a solventborne oil-modified urethane varnish.
Currently, conventional solvent-based oil-modified urethanes, with all of their features and benefits, are facing extinction in the marketplace. The cause: implementation of volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations. The top performing solvent-based oil-modified urethanes have a hefty 520–550 gram/liter VOC. Regulations that will take effect in the northeastern United States in 2005 and in the Los Angeles area of California in 2006 call for VOCs of 350 g/L and 275 g/L, respectively.
Questions that are addressed in this article include: (1) What is an oil-modified urethane, and why is it so popular for wood floor coatings? (2) What are the VOC regulations? When do they take effect? (3) What test methods were used to determine alternative technology performance? (4) What are the alternatives to solvent-based OMU technology? (5) How do the alternatives compare to the best of the solvent OMU technologies (550 g/L)? Major benefits of radiation cure are the high curing speed and high crosslink density. High performance coatings with extremely low VOC/VHAPS, excellent abrasion, as well as chemical resistance, are obtained.
When complex substrates must be coated there is always the concern of uncured surfaces in shadow areas. Typically, more expensive UV equipment that optimizes a homogeneous radiation exposure is necessary, which requires higher capital investment. This has been seen for years as the largest hurdle for the industrial coater.
A new waterborne coatings system based on UV-PUDs can be cured with low energy UV-A lights, without sacrifice of performance properties for wood coatings applications. These types of lamps are significantly cheaper in their investment costs as well as in their maintenance. In this article, coatings performances are discussed with special respect to low intensity UV-A lamps, UV-curing PUDs, and the effect of adding self-crosslinking dispersions. MesureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Because of the importance of knowing the Critical Pigment Volume Concentration (CPVC) for maximum performance of ail pig¬mented coating systems, a large number of methods to measure CPVC have been proposed. All at¬tempts to predict the critical point on theoretical grounds have been unsuccessful. Some tests for CPVC are quite accurate and reliable in showing where the break in the for¬mulating ladder exists. Some re¬quire considerable judgment.
All tests for CPVC, unfortunately, require the preparation of the coat¬ing compositions, induding pig¬ments used, vehicles (both solution and latex type), and their grinds. The composition must then be de¬posited on some substrate and dried—either by air or bake—before the classical tests can be used. All facets of the coatings manufacture must be induded in the test sam¬pies. The required sample may be produced relatively fast in the case of baked systems or very slow in the case of some air-dried systems.
Ail of the classical tests made on these PVC ladders are relatively time consuming and total testing time may require many hours. A new method of testing on the PVC ladder, which is both veryfast and requires minimal instrumentaion, is proposed here. For the most part, the tests on each sample can be made in less than one minute.
