Increasing environmental regulations force the leather industry to implement eco-friendly processes as well as chemicals. The pollution due to chromium is one of the major constraints in the leather industry. Chrome recovery and reuse methods have already been well addressed and are being implemented by many tanneries. The other area of release of chromium is semichrome process where the recovery and reuse becomes problematic due to the presence of the vegetable tannins. An attempt has been made to selectively remove the vegetable tannins with the subsequent recovery and reuse of chromium for chrome tanning. In this study, the vegetable tannins present in the semi-chrome-spent liquor are precipitated using zinc chloride and barium chloride. It has been observed that the COD of the spent chrome liquor is reduced by 44 and 53%, respectively after the precipitation of vegetable tannins using zinc chloride and barium chloride. The chromium is then recovered through known methodology and reused for conventional chrome tanning. The characteristics of the wet-tanned and crust leathers have been studied. It has been found that recovered chrome liquor when used for tanning after precipitation of vegetable tannins with zinc chloride gives better results in terms of color, smoothness and feel of the leather. |
