Nowadays, natural fibers of plant or animal origin can be described as terrestrial natural fibers, as they are produced on land. The cultivation and production of these fibers on land require a high amount of land use, which competes with other land uses such as food production. In contrast, the cultivation of aquatic plant fibers represents a quantum leap in the world of textile raw materials, as natural fiber resources can now be provided almost decoupled from agricultural land use. Fibrous aquatic plants grow as natural fibers in water, and the strategic advantage of such a habitat for their cultivation is immediately apparent when looking at our world map : 71% of our planet is covered by water.
