Titre : Chrome tanning in the nineteenth century Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : R. S. Thomson, Auteur Année de publication : 1985 Article en page(s) : p. 93-98 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The history of the discovery and early use of chromium chemicals is summarised. The application of chromium salts by wrrington (1841), Cavallin (1845) and DeKercado (1851) is described bridfly. Patented processes for the use of chromium salts in the leather trades during th 1860s and 1870s are reviewed. The world wide, commercial-scale operation of the Heinzerling process (1878) is outlined. It is shown that the traditional belief, that chrome taning was invented by Knapp (1858) and not developed practically until the two-bath tannage of Schultz (1884) and the one-bath tannage of schultz (1884) and the one-bath method of Dennis (1893) is over-simplistic. It is suggested that the development of chrome tanning in the nineteenth century came from a steady accumulation of knowledge and experience and was not the result of a series of breakthroughs by individual inventors. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The early work on the conservation of leather objects of historic and artistic value will be reviewed and it will be shown that this was based on techniques developed for the preservation of bookbindings. The essential differences between conservation, restoration and replication will be defined and the place of each of these in the preservation of our cultural heritage will be discussed. The skills and knowledge required of modern scientific based professional conservators will be analysed. Recent research carried out at the Leather Conservation Centre into two very different aspects of the preservation of leather objects will be summarised. Examples of some of the practical conservation projects undertaken at the Centre will be shown to illustrate the ubiquity of leather in historic collections and the wide range of techniques employed to preserve this specialist sector of our heritage. ReliureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The determination of the overall quality of any type of leather is a subjective assessment depending primarily on the end use to which it will be put. This applies as much to the assessment of bookbinding leathers as to any other material. If one asks a number of bookbinders what makes a good leather, at first sight they each seem to have a different opinion. However, on closer examination these differences appear to arise from how people describe what are complex subjective characteristics rather than actual discrepancies themselves. Individual bookbinders all have personal aesthetic preferences which are associated with the type of grain pattern, colour and the presence or absence of minor surface blemishes. Some bookbinders like to work with skins having a uniform surface appearance. Others prefer more "natural" looking materials. Note de contenu : - Organoleptic Assessment
