The determination of the overall quality of any type of leather is a subjective assessment depending primarily on the end use to which it will be put. This applies as much to the assessment of bookbinding leathers as to any other material. If one asks a number of bookbinders what makes a good leather, at first sight they each seem to have a different opinion. However, on closer examination these differences appear to arise from how people describe what are complex subjective characteristics rather than actual discrepancies themselves. Individual bookbinders all have personal aesthetic preferences which are associated with the type of grain pattern, colour and the presence or absence of minor surface blemishes. Some bookbinders like to work with skins having a uniform surface appearance. Others prefer more "natural" looking materials. |
