Batch tests can be used successfully for the determination of kinetic parameters and toxicity of wastewater. The results obtained in the present study show that pre-treated tannery wastewater is not toxic to microorganisms. The design criteria evolved using the batch study were loading rate (0.09 BOD/mixed liquor volatile suspended solids) and hydraulic retention time (> 24 hours) for meeting the effluent BOD standard. These design values suggest that the extended aeration system is the most appropriate activated sludge treatment method for tannery wastewater. The half-velocity constant (Ks) evaluated was in the range 245 - 312 mg/l on BOD basis and 963-1138 mg/l on COD basis. Ks defines the substrate uptake characteristics. The relatively higher value of Ks for tannery wastewater compared to domestic wastewater indicates that substrate removal is slower and hence longer retention time is required for complete biodegradation of tannery wastewater. The regression analysis of the batch experimental data in a coordinate system InS/S0 versus tXa for the determination of specific rate constant (KE) resulted in a satisfactory correlation coefficient (r = 0.99). Estimating biokinetic constants for tannery wastewater according to a first order reaction using a batch reactor was satisfactory. Tannage Résumé : Sulphide in limeyard waste-water is generally estimated to be present at levels of the order of 2,000-3,000 mg/l. Oxidation by air in the presence of manganese sulphate as catalyst is a possible removal technique but there is a likelihood of increasing the level of Total Dissolved Solids (tDS) in the effluent. Rice bran based granular activated carbon may be used as a catalyst to oxidise sulphide (up to 90 %) by air, irrespective of the initial concentration of sulphide The efficiency of removal of sulphide increases to 99 % when an activated carbon packed counter current reactor is used. During the oxidation of sulphide in limeyard waste-water, 92 % of the total oxygen demand and 90 % of the dissolved protein were removed.
