Tannage Résumé : In this work, the alkaline digestion of chrome shavings with sodium hydroxide was studied. We have demonstrated that the best operating conditions would be about 0.5M for NaOH concentration and 15 minutes for the reaction. The process allows the recovery of proteins in the aqueous phase and the metallic salts in the solid phase (cake). Solid proteins with a high nitrogen percentage and a very low chrome content are recovered after lyophilisation of the liquid. Chemical treatment was used to purify the chrome cake for recycle. The purified chromium was transformed to basic chromic sulfates with basicity 33°S and tanning tests, using cattle hides and goat skins, were carried out to study the tanning capability of the reused product. Characteristics such as chromium oxide content and shrinkage temperature were determined. Apparent quality of obtained leather (penetration of chromium into skins, colouring and firmness of samples in wet blue stage) was also studied. Tannage Résumé : The removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions by adsorption on tanned solid wastes was studied in a static batch reactor. The buffing dust sample proved to be a better adsorbent than chrome shavings. pH has anobvious influence on the adsorption of methylene blue onto buffing dust: under acidic conditions (pH<4.5) and at high pH values (pH>10.5), adsorption is less favourable. Four hours of adsorption was chosen as equilibrium time. The maximum adsorption capacity is about 84 mg of methylene blue for each gram of buffing dust.
