TannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The objective of this work is to treat the saline wastewater from tanneries to recover salt and to study the reuse of the recovered salt. Soak liquor from the tannery was treated electrochemically using graphite electrodes. The reduction in TKN, protein and COD was 78.52%, 83.02% and 79.35% respectively and complete disinfection was also achieved. The treated soak liquor was evaporated by solar evaporation and the salt recovered used for curing of skins. Curing efficacy was assessed for a period of 32 days. The preservation efficacy of the recovered salt, in terms of moisture and bacterial population of the hides, was found to be on par with that of the hides preserved using fresh salt. Soaking wastewater of volume 1 m3 was also treated on a commercial scale. Three batches of treatment were carried out. The salt recovered was reused for preservation of raw hides. The quality of the preserved hides and the wet blue leathers were also assessed. Results of the commercial scale experiments were similar to the results of the laboratory scale experiments. Cost of treatment was about 0.68 US $ per m3. Electrochemical treatment of soak liquor was found to be effective in pollution attenuation. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Cr(VI) detection without false positives in coloured (dyed) leather is an important issue. Several studies have highlighted the problems faced and the unreliability of the present official procedures viz. IUC-18, DIN 53314 and EN 420 especially when applied to coloured leathers. This is due to colourants soluble in the extractant interfering seriously when analysed by visible spectrophotometry. In the present study a method has been developed which targets cleaning of the matrix elements mainly dye in the first step, followed by ion chromatography with post column derivatization using DPC (1,5-diphenylcarbazide). The method is found to work with greater reliability, as ascertained from several Cr(VI) spiked studies on deliberated matrix preparations constituting Cr(III) and dyes. The study included analyses of several coloured leathers, and their spiked leather extracts and comparison of official procedures with IC (Ion chromatography) involving wet blue and light coloured leathers. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Spectrophotometric detection of Cr(VI) by 1,5-diphenylcarbazide derivatization method recommended by the IUC-18 protocol suffers seriously due to the interference of colorants present in dyed leather extracts. Recently a C-18 reverse phase cartridge clean up for the color removal was recommended but the method has limitations. The present paper suggests an alternate material, which serves better for the removal of interfering colors. This method is rapid, very effective, and economic for the detection of Cr(VI) in finished leathers.
