The glass-transition, the crystallisation and the denaturation temperatures of the collagen molecule within the leather matrix were measured. At low moisture content one single endothermic peak which corresponds to the denaturation process of leather and the evaporation of water was detected. At higher moisture contents two endothermic peaks were detected, the first one corresponding to denaturation and the second one to evaporation of water. The temperature of the low-temperature peak decreased as the water content increased. At much higher moisture content the low temperature peak maintained its temperature being equal to the shrinkage temperature of leather determined by the IUP-16 standard method. The glass transition of room-conditioned leather determined by DSC in sealed pans was approx. 45ºC. The application of dynamical stresses under transverse compressive penetration and longitudinal extension modes allows us to determine the glass-transition temperature of collagen in conditioned and dried states and the denaturation temperature in dried state of collagen. The results agree with those obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA). The thermal transitions determined by TMA in transverse compressive penetration mode showed a good relationship with the origin and final application of leather. This comfort is related to the capacity of absorption and desorption of moisture and with the physical, mechanical and organoleptic characteristics of the leather. After tanning, fatliquoring and retanning are the operations that more intensively modify the characteristics of leather articles.
This work is a continuation of two previous ones that have studied the influence of fatliquoring on softness and compressibility of leather and on grain and corium quality of leather assessed by ball bursting and tearing tests. In this case, the effect of fatliquoring on moisture absorption-desorption characteristics of leather is studied. The experimental work has been carried out in the pilot plant of Trumpler Española S. A. and the moisture absorption-desorption tests in the Laboratory of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry of the IQAC. The behavior of non-fatliquored leather and that of leather fatliquored with a combination of sulphited triglycerides of colza oil and fatty polymer (TCSi/PGR) or fatliquored separately with their components TCSi and PGR, or with phosphoric ester ESF or sulphited fish oil Psi has been determined.
The determination of the size of the moisture absorbing monolayer (Xm), the binding energy constants of the monolayer C and the multilayer K, the maximum absorption capacity at saturation X1 and the hysteresis (Hyst.) between absorption and desorption, enabled us to classify the different fatliquoring agents according to stage (crust-blue, finished-red) by applying factorial analysis (see following graph). Finishing is the factor that best explains this behavior. Finishing decreases the size of the monolayer and increases the binding energy constants. Fatliquoring decreases the maximum absorption capacity and hysteresis, partially affecting the reduction of the monolayer size.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Absorption isotherms - Objective

As hygroscopic specimens take a very long time to reach equilibrium, testing times were shortened and kinetic models based on the experimental results were developed to calculate the adsorption at equilibrium, the time of half adsorption/desorption, the rate of half adsorption and the apparent coefficient of diffusion suggests that the rate of moisture adsorption is determined by the rate of diffusion inside the sample. Despite the fact that the testing of sorption/desorption behavior is time consuming, the application of a Dynamic Vapor Sorption analyzer enabled us to characterize the sorption/desorption behavior of materials in a relatively short time. Differences in sorption and desorption can be related to the accessibility and internal tortuosity of the materials. BET and GAB models were used to analyze variations in monolayer sorption capacity (internal sorption surface) of different forms of collagen (hide powder and leather). Variations in the energy constants related to primary and secondary sorption were also considered. Given that tests in desorption were performed, the BET and GAB models were also fitted to desorption and the differences observed in the parameters were analyzed. A model of sorption-desorption for porous materials was devised to account for the differences between sorption and desorption.
