Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The Rohm and Haas Company has developed a novel acrylic polymer technology for use in topcoat finishing formulations. Products making use of this unique polymer technology can deliver performance comparable to many polyurethane based materials, while providing the aesthetics and cost efficiency that can only be achieved with acrylic polymers. The key enabler in this technology is an acrylic bound-duller that provides comparable gloss, "jetness" and performance properties, at comparable loadings to many commercially available polyurethane based dulling materials. The technology is inherently solvent free, and is compatible with older acrylic and PUD resin components as well as conventional cross linking chemistries. This new technology will provide leather finishers with additional options in high quality finishes with enhanced economics. Usure (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : High performance topcoats designed for automotive and furniture upholstery are generally rich in polyurethane dispersion (PUD)-based binders. This binder technology has been used commercially for years because it offers a distinct combination of high abrasion resistance, flexibility, and tactile performance benefits. However, recent market trends place higher emphasis on performance properties that are challenging for these traditional finishing systems to achieve. Such properties include: dirt pick-up and dye transfer resistance, cleanability after soiling, as well as UV, hydrolytic, and thermal stability. Topcoats featuring acrylic-based binders are increasingly competitive due to intrinsic soiling resistance and stability properties; however, replacing more than approximately 25% of the polyurethane-based resin with acrylic-based resin can result in a noticeable loss in abrasion resistance or toughness. The Dow Chemical Company has developed a novel acrylic binder technology designed to offer many of the same advantages of PUD binders, such as toughness, while retaining the enhanced soiling resistance and stability needed to address the stringent demands of today’s market. This paper describes the performance properties attributed to this new binder technology through a systematic validation process. Usure (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Coatings designed for leather finishes are subjected to ever increasing performance specifications, requiring accurate assessments to properly judge performance. Unfortunately, the results of many tests utilized to determine leather finish performance are plagued by high levels of variability. One such test is the Gakushin wear resistance test, which is required by a number of Japanese auto manufacturers, but can be used more generally to measure wear performance important to most automotive OEMs. Gakushin wear testing also requires intensive operator monitoring over lengthy test cycles and does not present an easily determined endpoint. It is therefore often run unmonitored as a pass/fail test, forfeiting the potential to detect performance gradients among samples.
In order to address these challenges, a new system has been developed that preserves the critical components of the wearing system, but adds automation and imaging systems that allow it to run completely unattended. A digital control circuit that periodically interrupts the wearing cycle initiates the capture and storage of high resolution images of the leather samples under test. After the test is completed, the operator is able to view the sequential images, selecting the exact point of coating failure. One benefit of this system is higher productivity, since the test can be run unattended. Also, since the operator is able to evaluate images of the coating both before and after the selected endpoint, the error associated with endpoint detection is minimized and the test yields more precise data than when performed in pass/fail mode. This combination of higher productivity and more precise endpoint detection facilitates the use of statistical data analysis on the results. In addition, the images showing coating wear following the endpoint allow an analysis of failure mode. These factors combine to make the improved Gakushin instrument a potent product development tool for wear resistant topcoats.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : General - Description of gakushin wear test - Advantages and disadvantages of the gakushin test - Gakushin test variability - Instrument automation
