Consequently research efforts are being made to identify the source of Cr(VI) and eliminate it in finished leathers. This paper deals with the study on the use of reducing agents based on sulfur and phosphonium compounds for elimination of hexavalent chromium in the leathers. Sodium bisulfite and tetrakis-hydroxymethylphosphonium sulfate were found to eliminate hexavalent chromium well below the detectable limit. The performance of these two compounds has also been studied by the external addition of dichromate in processing. Solidité de la couleurIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Dyeing is a significant process step in leather making that is carried out to enhance the aesthetics of the tanned hides and skins. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the skin matrix, obtaining leathers with consistent color is challenging. The present study describes application of hydrotalcite-like inorganic synthetic material (HTLM) during leather dyeing to bring color uniformity among leathers by maximizing the color intensity within the skin and among the skins processed in a batch. The HTLM has been used in an interim step between two phases of dyeing that enhanced shade intensity as well as color consistency through modification of the leather surface chemically. The efficacy of the HTLM for enhanced color intensity and uniformity in leather has been investigated. Influence of the HTLM on the physicals characteristics like, perspiration, color fastness to light and dry/wet rub are also studied. Note de contenu : - Materials

Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Cow wet blue stock was colored with solubilized sulfur dyes in a systematic study to unravel the color yield quality of dyeing and fastness of the dyes. These dyes penetrated the leather cross-section well and this performance resulted in a beneficial tone-in-tone dyeing, which means that the color of the grain, flesh and cross section of leather was almost the same tone. The levelness and uniformity of dyeing were excellent. Their fastness performance was generally very good. The resultant shades suggested that the sulfur dyes were best suited for light, pastel and medium shades, which require a high degree of levelness, penetration and fastness properties. An intense shade resulted from offering the sulfur dyes ahead of the retanning and fatliquoring process steps with a trivial reduction in penetration through the leather cross section for all the ten dyes studied. These findings favor the profitable production of light, medium to dark dye shades on leathers.
